    MAF sensor cleaning

Well i went out and bought some electrical contact cleaner after taking my MAF sensor off 2 days ago with the intent of cleaning it (70,000mi). In all honesty I almost wanna say that my car feels a little smoother and responsive, but hell I wanna say that when i clean the carpet or the inside dash. (Any time I clean it I always feel like it runs better.) But back the the point at hand, MAF sensor cleaning. I was expecting to take it off and see all sorts of crap on it, always a little skeptical about the real filtering ability of my Weapon-R SRI i have had on for almost 3 years now but it turns out it was just a little dull. I went ahead and sprayed a bunch on though and saw it shine up with a little glimmer, let it dry, put it back in. I just have been reading a few posts that around 50k miles its good to clean it but in all honestly i think if you got good filtering there is really no need. Just thought i would share my experience with it since I read a few posts about it lately.

    which part did you clean??
the part in first picture or second picture??

anyways~ i do have problem with my MAF sensor for a long whiel that my Check Engine light just came on all the itme, so i have to reset it~ and it was the MAF sensor(Too Lean). I cleaned them couple time b4, but only on the part of 2nd picture. Today, i just clean the part in 1st picture. i will see if the check engien light still come on this time.
hopefully, i don't need to buy another MAF sensor, they cost an arm and leg.. :(

by the way, i didn't use Electronic Contact Cleaner. I used Brake Cleaner, it will work too.

yeha~ so far the CEL is not on "yet", and the car running better now(except starting, it ususally hit 2100rpm when starting, only 1800 now).

hopefully it won't come on at all, since i already order the parts that is 218 CAD + 14% tax. I will just tell them that i don't need it after all :D

So is there also a sensor to clean up for the 98-99? so it also rides a little smoother and what not?

not really its better is you remove the entire intake and clean with with throttle intake cleaner and it will run better but remember to not wet the map sensor as it may damage it.

You shouldn't use brake cleaner because it could eat plastic. Try electrical contact cleaner.

still never use brake cleaner the solvents are too strong and cause minor corrosion to the aluminum. throttle cleaner is better lubricated and not as harsh.

just wipe it really clean after using brake cleaner~

so far my CEL is stilll Off, means i might not need to change the maf sensor after all.

I wouldn't suggest wiping any of the sensors in the MAF as they are very brittle. Come on guys, Electrical contact cleaner is 5-6 bucks a can. MAF's are 100+ bucks, its really not worth the risk to cut corners on this one.

    you can also do this.
get a few cotton swabs (Q-tips) and soak or spray them with the cleaner and gently wipe over the electrical contacts. this is what i did and it worked for me if you don't have any swabs. Roll a tissue or toilet paper and do the same thing and it still works so ther is no excuse.

the dealer cost is 320 dollars I paid 300 at advance auto parts and it actually works the same.

wiping with clean tower will not hurt. Toyota clean them with Brake Cleaner as well, they don't have Electronic Contact Cleaner at shop. that is what they use to clean it. it's fine, i have no porblem with that at all. it didn't show any sign of wear or stuff like that.
It will be better to clean with Electronic Contact Clean, but i'm not a cheapo and it's not a wrong way to clean it. There is just better way.

it cost around 250 CAD after taxed. not a cheap parts replacement.

that is what i used to clean the inner part with cotton swab too. works well.

I need to clean my MAF sensor. Where is it located and what does it look like? I have searched and have been unable to find the answer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Duc

it should be located on the intake element or the hose. i am not sure on that year of the rolla. it does have a MAF though.
