Engine Engine Swap Question

    Engine Swap Question

    Ok so i happened to hydrolock my 2000 a couple of months back and my car's been sitting ever since. But i finally got some money from my income tax and so i called around looking for a shop to do the swap. A reputable shop quoted me at $1600 including parts and labor. But the thing is, they were going to use an engine from an 2006 model. All they said was that the intake and exhuast manifolds were different. My question is, will it just be a direct drop in? Isn't the acceleration controlled by something else on the newer models? i remember reading about somethin electronic. Any input anyone???

    The newer engines (2005+) are DBW - so they will also need to grab all the wiring and ECM to make it work. The newer cars also started using air-fuel sensors instead of conventional O2 sensors - they tend to be a bit more expensive.

    Engine is from the same family of engines - but I wouldn't call it a direct swap either (two separate generations). Even models within the same generation have swap issues -chances are this will not be trivial - unless the shop has done this exact swap before.

    Physically it will fit - but be mindful of lots of new electronics bits, EVAP system is different, previously mentioned intake/exhaust changes, probably more. If the shop has an entire donor car there - you should be OK. If they just have the engine alone, nothing else - you might be in trouble.

    I'd find out exactly what is involved and if the shop has done this "exact" swap before. Not we've done plenty of swaps "like" this - this "exact" swap. Price wise, that is a decent price for a swap (parts and labor - especially for a 2006 engine). If they can source a good 2000-2002 Corolla engine (non oil burner) - I'd bet that would drop the price considerably.

    I'm almost sure you can swap any 1zz from 2000-2004. Plu did a swap and I think he used a 2003 engine. But he went from 98 to 03, so he changed the ecu. But the engines after 2002 tend to burn less oil. When my engine goes I'm planning on getting an 03 or 04 engine. But do your research before anything

    You can swap in the 06 engine but they will use your old intake manifold and throttle body and all that so you don't have to worry about DBW.

    How did you manage to hydrolock it? did you pull the plugs and try spraying the liquid out?

    makes me wonder.... either your entire filter would have had to have been under water completely water at high rpm to achieve this...... At low rpm's the engine would burn it off and then slowly die down.... anything close to splashing the filter (even a lot) with water would only cause it to sputter and clean some carbon off your valves.....

    drove through a puddle not thinking of how deep it reallie was. turned out to be more than enough to submerge my intake. yeah, i shouldv'e known better. tried taking out the plugs, tried to push it forward while in reverse gear, tried pushing it backwards while in drive, some liquid came out but not enough. i think the shop can get the electricals with it but i gotta double-check on that. im taking my car to them to check it out tomorrow morning. wish me luck.....

    could you drain the oil? water might slip past the rings and be sitting in there, otherwise you could try a thin hose and a hand bulb pump to get the water out.. engine still might be usable

    also I might try some heet and starting fluid in the cylinders. (just not too much) stuff will explode and should get the engine to spin

    make sure your oil is good still before doing that though

    well actually, i believe a rod shot into the oil pan. it blew a crack into the back wall of the oil pan, which of course made all of my oil drip onto the floor. which sucked @** completely. it was then that i knew my engine was gone.

    i think swapping out the engine is better than replacing parts. however from personal experience, don't get a rebuilt engine unless its from the toyota dealers and always make sure they have some kind of warranty.

    $1600 thats pretty cheap especially for a newer engine,you know how many miles is on the motor?if you dont know you can do carfax report.

    I sold mine for $450 lol, nobody would even pay 500 for a 1zz with less than 2k miles here

    he had to have the comp reprogrammed for vvt-i tho huh? or probably just got a vvt-i ecu.

    celica gt so he already had it. you get the 130-140HP out of it too because he stuck the celica intake/exhaust on it and celica gt ecu

    I doubt any more power, unless the last motor was experiencing loss of power. :)

    lol.... yah it seems to be a lot more powerful :).... the motor has about 28k on it....
