SILVER SPRING, Md. -- Montgomery County Police say a 17 year-old Rockville High School student died when he was ejected from a car after it hit a tree on Veirs Mill Road. Police are now questioning his friends, including the driver of the car, because witnesses say he was racing a second vehicle when his car lost control.

Family members and friends collapsed when they saw the two halves of the same car, shredded by a tree along the eastbound lanes of Veirs Mill Road near the Rock Creek Terrace Apartment Complex in Rockville, MD.

The car went straight for the tree, says Michael Asghedom, who watched the accident from the window of his apartment. Hit the tree. The back part of the car flew off and went that way and the other part of the car came this way.

Asghedom says his neighbors poured out of the apartment complex to help the driver, who was still sitting behind the wheel of the car. Asghedom ran towards the tree.

I came up here to see if there was another car involved and once I looked to my left there was a dead body there, Asghedom says.

Police say 17 year-old Thiago Andrade was thrown from the car when it hit the tree and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, 17 year-old Johvanny Alonso Garmendez, survived and was sent to a shock trauma center.

Hes conscious and hes talking with investigators, says Montgomery Count Police Spokesman Paul Starks.

Police also questioned two teenagers at the scene, who were inside a second vehicle. Witnesses say the two cars were racing each other at high-speed when the accident occurred.

In the chaos after the accident, Asghedom says the teenager told him they were best friends. "I asked him, 'do you know these guys?'" Asghedom says. "He said, 'Yes, he's my friend. He's like my brother, I grew up with him.'"

Montgomery County Police are asking anyone who saw anything unusual around 12:30 pm Sunday on Viers Mill Road to cal them at 240-773-5030.

Very tragic. Street racing is pretty dumb to begin with - but to do it while with a passenger is even more idiotic. Driver should be looking at manslaughter at the minimum.

Yup, I guess so. Maybe if he beefed up the suspension, added front and rear strut bars, IHE, a roll cage, and had some slicks on he wouldnt loose control. That and he shouldnt have been racing in the streets.

And that wasn't too far from the last accident that claimed the life of a girl who was going home. A car was racing and lost control an went head on into her car. killed the girl instantly. That are ais notorious for street racing.

I really feel for the victims harmed in these street racing incidents. Victims meaning those not sitting in the cars that are racing. Those who chose to ride with the idiot driving it are just as involved. I have no sympathy for any of them in the car. There should be no leniency at all dealing with street racing. If caught, you should be sentenced to life in prison or death row. And I'm not joking. These stupid kids and even adults give innocent people the death sentence when driving with their stupidity. Shame on them.

no it doesnt. there are countless more responsible teenage drivers out there. but the news wont tell you "a 17 year old boy from rockville highschool used his blinker to change lanes yesterday...."

You're right. The news only reports the tragedies. It never rewards the good. All we can hope for is stricter crackdowns on the actual act of street racing as well. It's not only limited to teenagers. There are irresponsible adults as well.

When you get your license youre expected to be able to drive well enough. When I drive myself somewhere safely I dont pat myself on the back and neither should any of you. Make no mistake, teens are the most prone to get into accidents than other older drivers and are the most prone to making bad decisions on the road.

If I were to die in a crazy manner, it wouldn't be in a car accident. I would have to say while skydiving or in the middle of sex. hahahaha

Im with you on "shame on them", but if caught street racing one shouldnt be put to death because of it, lol

Young people ages 15-24 represent only 14% of the U.S. population. However, they account for 30%, ONE THIRD ($19 billion) of the total costs of motor vehicle injuries among males and 28% ($7 billion) of the total costs of motor vehicle injuries among females

    Right on

Irrelevant. An accident is an accident, even if some accidents are more severe than others. Either way, its no mistake that insurance for teens is more expensive than it is for older people.

In that study, motor vehicle injuries means ACTUAL injuries to drivers or passengers. Yes, a high percentage (not everyone) has fender benders. But 30% of INJURIES are from 15-24 year olds. Its due to lack of experience, not paying attention, etc etc etc

Youre right...its not like 30% and 28% are brutal- its more like 40% of all teen deaths are automobile related.

Its a fact that teenage drivers have much higher crash rates than 25+ year old.

I think I read somewhere, not sure if its VA or MD that they want to change the age in which kids get their permit and then they have to wait until they're 18 to get a license.

Thats cool and all but thats not gonna stop kids from driving stupid like this. There are restrictions when you have a permit and kids don't pay attention to them. Now a days, alot of younger kids are drinking and driving, racing, texting while driving, talking on the phone while driving, etc Some kids just don't use good judgement when it comes to driving.

Im all for raising the age limit to get ur drivers license. But then again I also think it would raise the amount of underaged drivers out there.
