    2003+ has direct fuel INJECTION???

    "2003 saw yet another major advancement, this one in gas mileage. Though the 2003 Corolla added both weight and a little horsepower - another 5 hp, making it 130 in total with 125 lb-ft of torque - gas mileage actually increased, thanks to direct injection."

    What??? My engine has direct injection? As in, fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber rather than injected into the head just before the intake valves? Is this correct?

    gas engines have had direct injection for a while.. all the cars in my house but our 86 camry have it.

    If it doesn't there's a 2nd metal box outside the engine that's a big mixing plenum.

    edit: look at my sig.. I think that may be a non direct injection engine, maybe

    That is a false statement in Corolland's Corolla 'Engine' section. I've already advised them back on Nov 25th in their general forum's 'Corolland Remake, Toyoland Intro';
    "There is an error on the Corolla Engines;
    "2003 saw yet another major advancement...thanks to direct injection. This system, long used by Mitsubishi in smaller engines, is even more efficient than the now-common sequential multiple-port electronic fuel injection, eliminating one more step in the process where fuel can fall out of suspension - essentially squirting it directly into the cylinder. Toyota is the first company to put direct injection into a standard-price "large" four-cylinder engine."
    Actually, the engine was originally designed to be a direct-injection engine, but the high sulfur content in American gasoline makes it impossible to build a clean-burning direct-injection gas engine with current technology.
    For most refiners, the Tier 2 gasoline sulfur program requires that sulfur content in gasoline be reduced to 30 ppm (parts per million). This reduction is to be phased in from 2003 through 2006. Gasoline today contains as much as 150 - 300 ppm sulfur."

    Actually, I think they were talking about direct injection. American models do NOT have direct injection as I've found out. Overseas models do because of cleaner burning gas. It's misleading info. Wouldn't direct injection 1ZZ-FE make it a 1ZZ-FSE (if that were the case).

    The 1ZZ-FE has been TDI since it's birth, so that's nothing new to the engine.

    the 1jz/2jz motor is not direct injection. i doubt that our corollas will have direct inject. i've only see direct injection on the 1jz-fse motor in japan and the new 2gr/3sr-fse in the newer gs, crowns and mark x. basically the newer v6 motor in japan has this. the 1zzfe has been around since the late 90s and having direct inject would require changes to the heads.

    That's right... Toyota only intended the 1ZZ-FE to have DFI that requires low sulphur gas, but instead opted for MPI (Multi-point fuel injection). (TDI=Turbo Diesel Injection)
    The injectors are in the head, near the intake port inlets (about 1-1/2" in). DFI would have a high pressure fuel pump feeding the injectors set beside the spark plugs, squirting directly in the combustion chamber.

    Acutally is TBI

    I believe the corolla actually has the throttle body fuel injection meaning only on injector at what used to be the carburator. I was disappointed to find out after I got the car because even Echo has fuel injection for individual cylinders!

    Like I said, the 1ZZ-FE has Multi-port injection. The 4 injectors are in the head, down in each intake port.

    Re: Acutally is TBI

    wow, it kinda low for toyota to be making tbi on a corolla after having EFI its entire life from the 4age to the zz series. isnt there a visble fuel rail when you take off the valve cover on the zz engines???

    Re: Acutally is TBI

    Of course, there is a visible fuel rail feeding 4 obvious fuel injectors in the 1ZZ-FE's intake ports. It is indeed a returnless sequential multi-port injection system.
    Now where the hell are we going with this, backwards? How many times will I have to clarify this already?? :evil:

    HA!! Funny stuff. I like it!

    ;)

    Of course it would be nice (cheaper) if all you had to do was replace 1 injector to upgrade the fuel system.
