Engine block heater for gas mileage

I was thinking about gas mileage and when you loose the most and realized it's when the car is cold and running in "open-loop"

So, as a solution you could install a block heater and plug it in before you drive(use a timer), even in the summer. This would preheat the water and minimize the time that the engine is running rich and save gas. Whatcha think?

well, atleast I wouldn't have to go easy on the engine for long.. it's hard not being able to rev it to the sky right after you start and it's ice cold

Using the block heater in summer is not worth it. You'll pay way more in hydro just for achieving operating temperature a couple minutes sooner.... and please abstain from redlining your engine till it's fully warmed up. :!:

Using a block heater in the winter would be a BIG help. Fuel enrichment goes WAY up when temps are below freezing. My gas mileage has dropped WAY low this winter - to around 28mpg. That's down from 35 typical.

FWIW, the ECU factors intake air temperature into the injection pulse width. There is NO correction @ 68ºF. It adds fuel below that temp and reduces fuel above that.

I called Toyota about the block heater for 03+ Corollas (not sure about 98-02). The block heater is manufactured by a company called Pyroil. It is part # 00213-00885. My dealer had a little trouble finding it, so if you want one, that's it. They said the price was $55 and you have to pay freight for it, so it probably would come to around $70.
