    ASP pulley

I just ordered my ASP http://www.aspracing.com/frame.htm 15% underdrive aluminum crank pulley for only $120.00 + $12 shipping (USPS to Canada). RPM Outlet http://www.rpmoutlet.com/asp.htm actually sells it for $100 but only in USA and they don't have a toll free number. The pulleys are available anodized in red, yellow, blue, green, black, etc...
I wonder how many already have an underdrive pulley on their 1ZZ FE. Was it worth it? Any problems?

if i were you i would have bought the unorthodoxed ss pulley set for about 400 bucks. it sounds like a lot but i read in a tuner magazine that when tested on a 130hp civic it boosed its hp on the dyno to around 150! thats an additional 20 hp from just pullies. now then the only thing holding me back from getting pullies is that i heard they put a lot of strain on your engine. somewhere in excess of 20% of your engine life is lost. idk if thats true or not but im still trying to reasearch into that modification.

I will get the same benefit from my ASP pulley. UR's crank pulley has the same underdrive and is only marginally lighter since it's drilled, and machined a bit thinner. UR's alternator pulley is the same size and also only marginally lighter than the already small stock piece. Their set sells for $304.80, or $238.80 for just the crank pulley, compared to $120.00 for the ASP. ASP's pulley is slick (less rotating wind drag :? ), built stronger, and they agreed to send it to Canada by mail. (UPS's 'brokerage" fee $$$)
UR answers all reliability and technical questions here;http://www.unorthodoxracing.com/faq_pulleys.html
Aluminum is much better than steel at absorbing vibration. Also, the pulley's lighter weight adds less inertia at the end of the crank, reducing twisting stress. The stock pulley is a few pounds heavier, increasing the need for a damper. It has an elastomer damper (outer weight on bonded rubber bushing), which cannot be ideally tuned for entire RPM range, and for modded engines.

replaceing the crank pulley looses the factory blancing of the O.E. pulley witch in turn cause the engine main and rod bearings to wear sooner. however as long as you use synthetic oil and do proper maintainence you will not have to worry. its not like your engines gonna blow at 100,000 miles or nothing its just not gonna last as long as somebody that hasnt modified their car. most performance inhancing mods cause the engine to wear sooner anyways

Yes, it's fine on the 1ZZ but I wouldn't do it on the 2ZZ cause of the sh*tty ass oil pump.

To answer your questions, I have the UR SS set and it kicks serious ass

    Underdrive pullies

There has been some concerns about underdriving the crank pulley. But in reality underdriving the crank pulley will only hurt certain vehicles. V8 and V6s and some 4s that have a harmonic balancer should not have the crank pulley replaced due to the pulley itself being balanced. The 03 corolla does not use a harmonic balancer, due to the fact that it is internally balanced. A harmonic balancer for those of you who may not know, is just a balanced weight that is cast onto the crank pulley. For vehicles that are internally balanced they do not use a harmonic balancer because it is the crankshaft that is balanced. So replacing the crank pulley on the 03 corolla has no effects on engine wear or any other abnormal wear. The horsepower gains to the wheels are 9whp. If you decide to replace the crank pulley, take it to the the dealership unless you know how many ft lbs of torque it takes to tightin the bolt for the crank pulley. I believe its 102.3 ft lbs of torque, but you may want to check for yourself. If you over torque it you could possibly twist the crankshaft resulting in abnormal engine wear and all the other possible bad things that will eat a engine up. You will also need a smaller serpertine belt which the instructions for installation of crank pulley will list belt size. I hope this helps

Actually, the pulley set is a waste of money on the 1ZZ since the alternator pulley that comes with the Crank pulley is the exact same size and really not lighter than it (by any noticable amount). It's only for looks actually, and it makes it a much more expensive mod.

I finally have some time to sit down and make a "how-to" on the crank pulley, I should do that some time this week I guess, lol
