Interesting... Why not use 5W30 as recomended? I'd like to see a test on Amsoil's synthetic. Also, why not try Fram's 'Tough Guard' filter with more synthetic glass and cellulose media and a 98% SPE, compared to 'X2' and 'Extra Guard's 96%. You could also try a superior air filter oil like Maxima's synthetic 'Fab 1'. http://www.maximausa.com/products/filteroils/filterspray.asp

My insolubles are low so I do not think there is a need for a filter which may or may not filter out more solids, but that is not recommended for extended drains.

I drive most of my miles on the freeway at 75-80 mph. I think a thicker oil is probably better for the car.

If you want to try diferent things go ahead. It costs about $30 for an oil analysis with TBN. Post your results here.

At operating tempature, 5W-30 and 10W-30 have the same viscosity. So, one is really not thicker than the other.

The "W" represents, it's winter (cold weather) rating. During cold weather start-up, the 5W acts like a 5 weight oil, flowing easier than the 10W. However, once warmed up, both act as 30 weight oils.....no difference.

So, in the end, there is no real benefit to using 10W-30. Because the 5W will protect your engine better at start-up and offer the same level of hot tempature protection.

You have oil analysis to prove that 5-30 is better than 10-30?

1ZZ-ROLLA-S has a valid point. 5W30 is not 'better' than 10W30... 5W30 flows more readily at startup, reducing wear, and has the same viscosity at operating temperatures. Besides, your engine has been designed with proper tolerances for use with 5W30, as recommended by Toyota.
