    Knock sensor on the 1ZZ...

the 1ZZ-FE engine has a high compression ratio - 10:1 is kind of high. That's where the whole idea of tapered squish area comes in.

Manual calls for 87 octane and using higher octane than 87 is only needed when pinging is excessive. Our engines do NOT have knock sensors, correct?? Otherwise, the manual would say premium fuel for best performance and the engine would probably never knock since the ECU would just retard the timing until it didn't knock anymore.

Some posts at www.corolland.com are talking about knock sensors and how great premium gas is for our cars and blah blah blah....

Just making sure I'm not crazy...

    Am I?

I think we're totally safe with the 87 octane from the manual since toyota is quite conservative when it comes to those things. Until toyota tells me that premium is the way to go, I'll stick with 87 octane and keep the extra change in my pocket. :)

The 1ZZ FE does have a knock sensor behind the head... Mine runs better and gets better mileage and performance on 91 octane gas.

89 is actually the best performance for 10:1 compression (91 octane is too high and is just a waste of money but 89 has a more aggressive timing curve cause of the VVT-i and the added resistance to knocking than 87).

So yeah, we have a knock sensor but 91 is a waste of $.10 IMO, just go with plus. Our engines run fine on 87 though, 89 is only needed if you want a couple more HP up top
