    RedLining

im just curious....has anyone ever redlined their car? and if so, is it bad to do that? i drive a 5 spd manual, but im afraid if i redline my baby it might break down on me or something....also what is the top speed you hit on your car...and did you hear any noises? I hit 100mph and the rpm was at around 4500-5000 rpms i believe without any problems

The 6500 RPM rev-limiter is quite easily reachable and kicks in smoothly.... Worried about a breakdown? lol! Ya right, and the VVTLi version of the same 1.8 block redlines at 8000 RPM.
Speed limiter is set at 190 Km/Hr (118 MPH) and is also easily reached... No strange noises, just pure smoothness. You are driving a state of the art, Toyota engineered car after all. Don't be afraid to push it.

I redlined my motor a few times since I had the supercharger installed. I didn't hear any abnormal noise or behaved strangely. It was pretty much a smooth hard acceleration like what dominator was referring too. Obviously, the engine and exhaust got much louder, but nothing went wrong with the engine. It's ok to do it once inawhile, just don't get too use to it and rev it high all the time. In general, it's not good for the engine. That is why they put a tach in there to let you know the safe operating parameters of the engine so you won't blow it up or something.

thats what a "redline" and "rev limiter" is for. There are a reason for these things. You can redline it all day. I use to and my corolla ran fine same gas milage.

BTW guy with the supercharger. What comes with the TRD s/c package?

Supercharger main assembly (head unit), mounting brackets-hardware-hoses which includes modified intake, fuel lines, all nuts and bolts, supercharger belt, cooler thermostat, TRD ECU kit-wiring harness for ECU and Injector, TRD SC ECM adapter, tie wraps, fastener strip, diagnostic sticker, and instructions. ALso comes with whole bunch of TRD Motor Sports and Supercharger emblems and CARB sticker with EO#, certificate for warranty and CARB.

Am I even forgetting anything? Oh yeah, you have to buy a new set of colder spark plugs (Denso IK20), and use high octane gasoline. I want to add a transmission cooler later, but Toyota said it is not necessary for the Corolla. Also future projects include a boost guage. WHy does the Tacome and TUndra get all the good stuff? Then again, they are pumping more power than the Corolla.

Yeah, the main concern to ensure extended trouble-free performance is regular maintenance. Never race a cold engine... Using real synthetic oil like Amsoil or at least Mobil 1 definitely helps too.

Ha, redline it a couple times daily

And the redline is changed to 6800 with the TRD piggyback ECU for the S/C

CORRECTION: The speed limiter is set at 190 KM/H (118 MPH). The needle tops out on the bulge at 185 KM/H (115 MPH) ... The 6500 RPM limiter actually seems too low, especially with mods. Peak HP does come at 6200 RPM, so using all the power and shifting on time before the limiter hits is quite challenging. I wish it could be set at 7000 RPM.

Yeah it's actually still pulling strong at 6500 (with CAI, bored TB, coolant bypass, ported and matched intake manifold, intake ports cleaned and polished down to injector bulge; (about 1.5" deep), exhaust ports' lower half ridge removed+clean+polish (1.5" deep), 2" Cherry Bomb muffler, ground upgrade, Amsoil in engine, tranny + P/S, 91 octane gas/Lucas upper cylinder lubricant...waiting on JP header, a huge improvement over 'Mickey Mouse' exhaust manifold... 8)
So, how can I raise my rev-limiter?

Well, considering that the TRD piggyback raises the redline to 6800 with the S/C, the motor is more than capable of it. And the fact that the exact same 1ZZ in the MRS has a redline of 7000 RPM.

I'm pissed, getting robbed of useful RPM's

Jack, the owner of Unichip was fairly confident he could remove it. Might try giving him a call

I live close to his home base shop, so I could have it tested if need be

does the ecu piggyback work for N/A rollas? I don't like being limited :D When i took it to the track i had it right at the red line before i shifted in each gear. GREAT FEELING!!! The only thing was my clutch smelled at the end of the night and my ECU had a brain fart...which i posted on the defects/solution area but no replies really....

    is unichip worth it...?

TRD piggyback only works with the S/C that I'm aware of, sorry.

I'm going to talk to the owner of Unichip about taking the rev limiter off this summer, I'll get back to you with the results

cool i was actually just about to pm you about that. I'd really like to take the rev limiter off but anyone know about how high we could safely take it after that. i love my car and know it's a "race" car and all but i still want to have some fun you know.....

I just have some honda friends that take theirs past 7500 rpm with their vtec and i just hang my head.....damn honda's :D

I've also been curious about the Unichip, so I've contacted Dastek directly to see what they have to say about it. I'll post their reply when I get it...

I think that it would be safe to 7500 easily (but not much more) cause the stock MRS (same exact motor) reds at 7K

Speeding is illegal. Haha. I love speed, however 100+ is hella fast on for normal driving. Other than the track and occasional pack speeding down the freeway, where lse do you need to go 118 mph or faster? I'm only concerned with how fast I can get to 0-60 and keeping up with other speeders after I get there. I can't tell you how wonderful the S/C is in fifth and 4k + RPMs.

Really, I can't tell you how many times the rev limiter has kept me from going into the redline.

Well, Dastek forwarded my email to Jack at Unichip US. The response was pretty lengthy, but here's the part that counts...

"Raising the redline will cost a fair amount (both in terms of time and $), won't make the car any faster, and can cause internal engine issues because of valve float."
