from what i was reading from toyota it should be a little different then the celica gt-s engine. The HP output was about 10 less because of some minor adjustments. Now if that means parts won't work i'm not sure. Some may not like CAI because of the two engine bay's are diff i'm sure. That's my two cents

the matrix is one thing but i imagine parts from the elise would be totally incompatible with the XRS, not to mention pricey

I'm not sure. I do know that Toyota retuned the 2ZZ-FE in the Corolla XRS to be different from the Celica GT-S and Matrix XRS. They tuned it for more low-end torque, thus being more driveable in daily situations. I'm not sure what exactly they changed to attain the new characteristics, but it would be interesting to find out. If the parts from the regular 2ZZ-FE don't fit the Corolla XRS, I wonder how many companies will be willing to make parts specific to the Corolla XRS :( .

after reading on matrixowners i learned that the header for the celica gts is identical to the header on the matrix xrs so im hoping/it shoud work on the corolla xrs..also, the transmissions on the celica gts seems to be identical to the matrix xrs with the exception of the shifter...this is all good news as if i do trade my 03 ce for the 05 xrs, i would have a load of aftermarket parts available.
