Can adding a spoiler effect handling?

I was thinking about adding a spoiler to my LE, but had a few questions. Has anybody done this and noticed if putting on a spoiler effected the handling or gas milage, due to added drag? Last, I was just curious if this could add wear to the paint, between the spoiler and trunk, due to a wind tunnel effect?
