cool thx for the quick reply
now it explains why the auto's gas mileage cant be better than the manual's
and also explains why auto will starts a lil faster
    thx alot

start as in accelerate faster? i think sticks will accelerate faster cuz it has shorter gear ratio. and shorter means faster but lower speed. but if u mean launch, i think on average, auto might have a faster reaction time..but depends on the one driving i guess.

and wow dind't know 3rd gear for auto is slightly shorter than stick

wait i thought that the higher the number, the better acceration, as in 4.0 is kick ass acceration?

Don't forget to take into account the differential or "final" gear ratio, which is multiplied by the ratio for each gear to get the true engine-to-wheel ratio.

The manual diff ratio is 3.941 and the auto is 2.962.

nope smaller. smaller ratio, faster accel. if u have gran turismo, try it out haha

...because we all know Gran Turismo is a perfectly accurate representation of automotive dynamics.

With a higher gear ratio you need less power to get to high RPM... so the acceleration is faster at the expense of top speed in the gear.

If smaller gear ratios meant better acceleration, you would accelerate better in 2nd gear than in 1st. We all know that's not true.

When taking the final gear ratio into account, the auto has a smaller 1st gear ratio than the manual. This is because you don't have to be as gentle on a torque converter as you do with a clutch to get it going. This also means your acceleration will not be as good in the auto because the smaller ratio combined with the torque converter means you need more power to get the tachometer moving.

4th gear on the auto actually has a smaller final gear ratio than 5th on the manual. However, the power (torque) loss through the torque converter makes up for it, so the engine still has to work harder to keep the same speed. This is why the auto is not as fuel efficient in top gear, even with the lower RPM.

Im gona have to agree with MrDisco on this one. HIGHER number means better acceleration, LOWER number means higher top speed(but ofcourse you need the power to get there)

oh maybe im talking about the pinion gear then. the smaller pinion gear, more acceleration but limited top speed. then in that case, u guys are right. higher ratio gives u faster acceleration but lower top speed. damn i've been mixing it up the whole time haha

just FYI, the max torque specs given on all the cars on GT3 is off by a factor of 10 (or maybe it's a 100, either way...it's not accurate).
