indeedski... however, it does get complicated the further down the line you go and the more details you want on them. However, if need be, i can take your IP and find out where you live. :) however, the avg joe cannot do this. The IP address would give you the possibility of finding out the ISP the user is using, however without further information contained within the records, the avg person cannot find out the info.

if it were that simple the RIAA would skip the subpoenas and go lay countless numbers of lawsuits on everyone.

yeah, with an IP address the best you'd be able to do is find out who owns it (company). If its a university, they usually have usernames in the DNS so you can find out that way but thats only if its a university IP and their netops decided to name them that way. Otherwise you'd have to go through courts to have the ISP's surrender contact information.

indeed... and in some cases (where say an ISP gets its address space from x company and x company doesnt change the responsible party information) you will get the upstream provider information (usually the tier 1 gateway information) then you've got to go through 2-3 companies just to get the info.

Isnt there a program that people are using in their signature that show your IP, your browser, etc?

Every single page load that you do with any web browser sends your IP address along with your browser info and other things to the server. That is done by default, but it does not mean that you can get any personal info out of it. Hell, even this board, and every other board keeps a log of your IP for every post that way they can tell if the same person is posting with different names from the same machine in case there is a problem and someone needs to be banned. Those people that have the info on their sigs is just code that is displaying your info to yourself. No one else will see your info displayed except you.

Anyway, having an IP address is like having someone's cell phone number. Yeah you can call and someone will/may answer, but getting them to tell you where they live, or finding out more information is almost impossible withouth a die hard investigation.

This is just an analogy so please don't go off in a cell phone discussion.

it's a java script that just replaces the ip with your ip each time it's run - so it shows everyone their ip... however what we see when we hit the admin button to see the IP that someone was using when they posted we see this:

The IP Address is: 209.245.22.19. The host name is: vortex.ginetx.net.

That's my info from my post.
