new Smart Key technology, by Lexus

Has anyone seen that new Lexus commercial that is keyless? They have this fingerprint technology or whatever it is that recognizes your unique prints to open doors and trunks. They showed a guy walk over to his car and the alram deactivates, moves his hand underneath the sensor of the trunk and it just pops open. Get this, the ignition system doesn't use a key, but just a turn of the switch that is built in below the dashboard. I just saw the commercial on that while watching the basketball game on ABC this Sunday morning....talk about luxury.

What happens if you need to go to a shop and they need the keys for it?

that's a good question. you'll probably have to be there with your car in person to deactivate it or something. Maybe, it will automatically lock itself and security on if the car is left inactive for a period of time.

I know with my Corolla, if I deactivate my alarm but don't open the doors (let's say i forgot something in my apartment and went after it before I enter my Corolla), the alarm comes back on and all the doors are locked again all by itself in like a minute. I didn't really time it to see the exact time it comes on, but it does. I thought, man that's pretty cool...

The smart keys are actually radio tags. You approach the car and it enables the locks. When you press the button on the door handle, the door opens. This may actually make the car easier to steal. It would probably take a week to try all the combinations, but would give the theif full control of the vehicle.

I have seen this before on a high end Mercedes-Bens. The radio tag is about the size of a credit card. Cadillac also has this technbology on their XLR Roadster.

Lexus is a US only brand. So in actuality, all technologies are Toyota's

Ok... maybe I should have clarified the Lexus "brand". The Lexus "brand" was created for the US market (in 89-90?), since no US consumer would have paid $30k+ for a Toyota when the first LS 400 was introduced. Obviously, Toyota's brand marketing works. Just look at the newly developed Scion brand.

Either way, all Lexus technologies have Toyota as their root.

Actually dynamic headlamp technology is not new. Look up Citroen (French). They introduced this technology (headlamps follow steering rack angle) in the 80's. Tucker may have also conceived the design, but it's unlikely that his concept ever made it to production.

I saw on the history channel that there was some car that was made arround the 40's or 50's that had a center mounted headlight (it still had the two normal headlights) that swiveled with the steering wheel, so this technology deffinately isnt new. Probably just revised and electronicly controled...
