    Stock Bumper Material

Anybody know what our stock bumpers are made out of? I've got a project going and would ike to cut away some of the port where the foglights would be (I've got a CE.) Plastic is no big deal, but if they're fibreglass (which I don't think, but wanted to check) its not gonna be worth my hassle. Thanks for any input!

Some kind of plastic. Fibreglass would not be a choice material for a bumper. One hit fractures everywhere...

It is made of PU or polyurethane which is flexible and will return to it's original shape (within certain limits). It is not ABS or acrylonitrile butadiene styrene which is a much more rigid material. You can grind and cut the bumper with no problem, but once you do I am not sure if they offer any repair kits anymore (just in case you mess up).

Thanks for the replies folks! I was just worried that I would have issues with the material splintering upon being cut, as fiberblass has been known to do.

i believe it's Polyurethane. I hit the curb really hard when my car spun out on the freeway..and i was left with a big dent on my driverside S lip. I used a blowdryer to heat it up for 5 straight minutes, and i was easily able to bend it back out. felt like a marshmellow sorta..hahah...

the dent was HUGE...like as if a big grapefruit hit it and created a home for itself. little dents on a polyurethane though prolly cant be fixed. i have a smaller dent above on my bumper above my plate number and i tried getting that back into the right mold, but it just couldnt. the dent is still there and the paint is actually starting to chip off on the edge of the dent. =(

I don't think Corolla bumpers have styrofoam. I guessing that it's a plastic grid-like baffle. In addition, to this there's a metal (steel or aluminum) reinforcement behind the styrofoam or plastic baffle that attaches the "bumper" to the (unibody) frame. When the metal bends, it's usually time for a new bumper (possibly as well as a host of other new parts!)

Haha, i just kinda find it funny that anything remotely resembling styrafoam is present in this car.
