    2003 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII

I know this is kind of off base with this Toyota web site and whether or not it has been discussed already, but has anyone even seen this beast? It's got an incredible amount of power for a 4cyl. I think its got like 271 Base HP running on what Mitsubishi calls "twin-scroll turbocharger " or whatever that is. Sounds intimidating. I think it goes up to like 160 mph. Will any of us even have a chance going up against the Evolution?

    No.

the evo has high HP, but is also 4WD so it puts the power to the pavement. it and the Subaru WRX STI are high on my list of cars to upgrade to should a spare 20-30k fall into my lap. (they both cost on the order of 28k)

Subaru definitely tops my list too. What do you think about the Lexus IS300?

It's a bit too chubby, now the IS430, that's a car!..........the Evo on the other hand is an amazing car.....and to correct the beak, the Evo is AWD not 4WD, and yes there is a difference. Unless you put about 50 grand into your corolla you will never be able to compete w/ an Evo. I've been in quite a few Evos and an STi.........the Evo is easily the nicer of the two.

WOw, the IS430 is out? I didn't know about it. I've got to take a look at the specs. I don't know why Mistubishi wont put a V6 into their Evolution. Wouldn't that be better and less burden on the engine? I mean a 2.0L 4cyl can only put out so much before stressing it. I'll bet the Evo would be much faster with the engine upgrade.

The IS430 was just a concept built by I think the Rod Millen team, I don't think this concept will ever see production sadly :( .

A turbocharged I4 makes more power and has less overall weight than a V6, plus it's capable of much higher engine revolutions, and just about any turbo'd car is easily tuneable...

rollaS, your correct, i have a had habbit of using the terms willi-nilli :)

the IS430 was built for SEMA, and IMO wont likley see production, besides the 6 in it now is a 2jz, like the supra had. thats a tunable motor if there ever was one. the IS is a little on the strange side, but reasonably high on my list if i were buying a car just to tune.

as for the 4's in the STI and the EVO, they are 2.0l because of the rules of the raly cars they are based on. you can tune any motor, even a v6 (have you guys forgotton the grand national?) given enough money and time. the rally based cars are always going to be 2.0's though, until the rally rules change. the race versions of these cars get upwards of six or seven hundred horses out of the same displacement, but try to run the street with a motor that high strung. i think you could probably crank things up to about 400 horse before they got to be too tempermantal to be a daily driver, but thats just me, some folks dont mind the nature of a near race motor on their drive to work.

Just a small correction regarding the STi's engine... the US bound versions actually use a 2.5L boxster (horizontally-opposed) engine. It is true the WRC regs permit a 2L max, but the production version STi has a blown 2.5L.

There is an EVO around where I live. Its always at the Strip, for anyone who lives around here. Its got a HKS SSQV BOV and is very loud Im told. The only thing bad I hear about Evos is that they are unreliable, and prone to problems.

i'd pick STi over EVO. i know the EVO looks nicer but hey STi dont look bad. and the STi...or WRX...or any flat engines, the sound is really unique.

Sure... that was the big uproar in the WRC circles. Somehow Subie managed to payoff the WRC (that's my theory). The WRC STi still has a turbocharged 2.0L, while the passenger STi has a turbo'd 2.5L.

naaa, I'll take an EVO :)

hehe well....maybe in a year or two, but at least down the strip, i should be able to take an evo when i'm done with the motor and tranny....

If nothing else i'll sound like an evo :)
