    alternator upgrade found

Not completely sure about this, but Tom at www.mralternator.com emailed me with a reply saying he could get me a direct replacement 120 amp alternator for a 2003 corolla for $245 bucks.. Doesnt seem like all that great of a price but if you've got the money and want a better alternator you might give that a try. If anyone finds something similar for a better price let me (or us) know.

And why would you need a better alternator? Will it have any noticable benefit?

bigger alt. means more power output so ur subs hit and less dimming of lights happen

1 Farad Capacitors. That'll take care of the temporary current draw that a sub would produce. Voila! no more dimmed lights

i had a 2 farad cap on a 1000 watt system and still had dimming in my old car.. that was with the factory 70 amp alternator.. i found a 90 amp direct fitting alternator upgrade, and there was no dimming at all unless i was idling, and even at idle it barely dimmed. That worked much better than the cap.. i also had it in conjunction with the cap and didnt really see any difference.. I wouldnt recommend a cap.. but like i said before.. i'd sell that 2 farad cap for 30 bucks.. cus thats about all i think its worth.. even though i paid 150 for it. anyone want it let me know.. but you'd probably be waisting your money..

You even had dimming when driving (not idling)? That seems strange that a 2 farad cap wouldn't have enough short-term juice to prevent your lights from dimming. Is your 1000w amp really pushing more wattage (@ lower ohms)?

you haveta have enuff power to supply power to a cap in order for it to be as effective. As someone mentioned before, just because u have a cap doesnt mean ur not gonna have dimming. it can help but thats not the solution, a better solution would be to combine a bigger alternator and a better battery, along with a cap. i have friends that have just a red top battery and is not gettin as much dimmin as i myself am.

Actually, that's a GREAT price for a 120A from MrAlternator. I believe it's only $30 more if you want it powdercoated or chromed. I've dealt with Tom before- very cool guy!

Stinger and Ohio Gen charge around $600 for a 150A for other cars. Go figure.

The only drawback of High Output Alts is that they produce lower current (Amperage) on Idle COMPARED to Stock Alt. Their current only jumps up above 1K RPM.

What most competitors do is they change the PULLEY with a larger one to increase RPM and output.

with my original alternator (70 amp i believe) i had dimming while i was driving and especially when i was idling.. while idling i still had just as much dimming with the cap it seemed.. i think it helped though while i was driving but i'm pretty sure it still dimmed a bit. with the new alternator that i got which was only 20 amps more, i had little dimming when idling and none while driving, thats with the cap or not.. the difference seemed subtle at best.. i think it kept my lights from diming on short burts of power but any strong bass line or something that lasted more than a second or so the lights dimmed like normal.. I also had a shitty battery then though so that might have been part of it.. I never ran any in depth studies, lol, i just didnt notice nearly as much difference as i thought i would considering what they cost..

Actually, yeah you probably are right that 245 is a great price for that alternator.. I guess i was comparing it to prices i've seen for alternators on american made vehicles which are quite a bit cheaper normally.. he was gunna sell me a 160 amp for my ford escort for like 200. and where i work i can get a 130 amp alternator for about 120 bucks, but unfortunately those alternators are for big trucks, no way it would fit in a corolla and the connectors i'm are different i'm sure.
