You also need to add an amber side reflector if you clear the corners.

i think he meant a reflector on the side of your car, just a plain one, cause hes taking the one out of his headlights. some sorta safety thing so ppl can see your front bumper

I don't see the point either. I'll try to make it simple for you. You must have amber reflectors at the front corners of the car. The amber pieces in the headlights are those reflectors. If you remove those, you must add new reflectors somewhere to stay legal. By the way genius, it's "you're a moron", not "your a moron".

I did it and didn't put a reflector in its place, and I passed my state inspection. I haven't had any trouble with cops and the inspector didn't mention anything, so I think you could be okay.

If you're worreid about inspection, do what I did. Paid 3 bucks for a pair of stick-on reflectors. Peel a half inch of the adhesive cover off the back, and stick them on the front end somewhere. After the inspection, take them back off. If you've got a good coat of wax on the car it won't hurt that paint to have them on for a couple days.

CorollaX is right, I've driven by at least a hundred cops with no reflector. Not one has even looked twice.

    Guys,

I think Oregon spells it out pretty clearly:

Question: Are "Altezza" or European tail/brake light and front marker lenses legal for street use in Oregon?

Answer: Oregon has adopted the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108 for lighting equipment. The standard is very specific for tail/brake light lenses and front side marker light lenses. The standard requires red lenses (not red bulbs) for the tail/brake lights and red rear and side reflex reflectors and red side marker lights. A separate rear side marker light and reflex reflector may also be allowed for the rear lighting system to meet the standard. The front side marker lens lights can be either white or amber (yellow) and must also have an amber (yellow) reflex reflector incorporated into the lens or have a separate side marker light and reflex reflector to meet the standard.

So, the answer to the question is in most cases after-market (non-original equipment) "Altezza" or European tail/brake and front marker light lenses are NOT legal for street use in Oregon. They usually lack the required reflex reflectors and side marker lights. Here is a link to a Web site with more information. http://fmvss108.tripod.com Note the "Recalls" section. Most all of the after-market "Altezza" and European lenses have been recalled for not meeting FMVSS 108. (ORS 816.010).

Bottom line, most states probably have adopted this standard. And, removing that reflector puts you in violation. Of course, to what extent the police will "get you" for it is questionable -- it can't be a high priority. But, it might be just one more thing to pile onto you if you ever get a ticket for something else.

I still can't see how removing the yellow reflector from your headlamp assembly and moving it somewhere else on the front of the car would be against the law. Up to just a few years ago most cars were built with the reflector not in the headlamp, and some still are today. The manufactures only moved it up there to save the money of stamping another hole in the fender.

New Hampshire laws are pretty vague on the subject. All it says is there must be yellow safety reflectors on the front sides of the car, and they must be "approved by the director". Who the heck knows what is and what isn't approved by the director? And, the director of what, the Fed DOT or the State DOT?

Depending on the state you live in, laws can differ. I am not too sure about NC, but the general rule for the majority of states is that there must be SOME kind of reflector (either clear or amber) at the front side of the vehicle. If you clear the corner of your headlights, you'll have to make up for it with some other reflector (probably just a clear stick on reflector is the best way to go) Additionally, the signal bulbs themselves do NOT need to be amber colored glass, but they MUST light up either amber or white. If you clear your headlights, Sylvania now makes SilverStar turn signal bulbs that have blue-ish color glass, but light up amber. They are street-legal, DOT approved. They definitely look better than the stock amber-colored glass bulbs when you have clear corners.
