When to upgrade exhaust?

Well I've got a cheap cylendar style muffler with a silencer on right now. I went to the local muffler shop and talked to them about options. Basically he said the best thing I could do right now would be to take the resonator out to gain some better flow. They can do anything I want, mandrel bent.

I don't want a loud exhaust, my muffler and silencer right now is perfect.
So I guess my question is would going to 2.25" pipe produce some HP gains worth my money? I'm thinking at $250 I should just get my windows tinted if the gains are negligable. I'd rather save the money for when I go turbo, and will have a real need for larger exhaust pipe.

So to redo the entire exhaust or not?

Secondly, has anyone had pleasing results with swapping out the stock resonator with say a cherry bomb or glasspak? It would be worth a few dollars to me if it sounds much better than stock. The muffler I've got on now has a nice tone, but it would be better if it was deeper.

Will changing the resonator deepen the tone?

So thats where I'm at, trying to figure out where to draw the line, or if I really need to do anything to it. Any experience, comments or advice is welcome!

I did my exhaust from the front all the way to the back with the following"
1 removed cat
2 removed muffler
3 left resonator alone
4 added one Y pipe
5 added two borla exhaust mufflers and two 3.5 inch borla tips.
the enitre exhaust is a 2.5 all the way to the back and the cost came out to 190 bucks and it sounds low tone and gained adequate power overall especiall at high RPM.

Is it loud like that?

I started with just a catback and a straight-through muffler, but had a resonator added later. It sounds much better now..

Hm... so a resonator helps. I wonder if there is a difference in sound from an aftermarket as opposed to a stock resonator.

I think if I do anything at all it would be putting a new resonator on. Then leave it alone until it's turbo time.

no resonator on mines whatsoever, its not loud and it doesnt sound fart-canny, u just gotta pick the right style muffler to suit all ur needs

Nope not at all. at idle it purrs prefectly sound and when driving you can hear it but just enough to know its there. at high rpm it opens up super high but not with that high pitch noise that most four cylinders do. It sounds very deep. as if though it had a bigger engine.

There is a difference between aftermarket and stock.
Stock tends to be a bit cheap and has more metal than some aftermarket. Mine has interweaved fiberglass with an aluminum shell and interals so its very light weight. kool you should do that.

True. you car is as fast as deep as your pockets? i am not way rich even though i may come from wealthy parents. I have not spent very much on my car (I think) and it takes or it took of pretty well. but then a gain yeah you are right.

Ok, looks like I'm just gonna leave it be for now. Maybe switch out a resonator...

Why do you have a dual exhaust 01Rolla's, doesnt that rob power from you? When a car doesnt come with, or have the option for a dual exhaust it doesnt need it, nor does it benefit it.....it does look cooler if done right, but from what I have heard, it robs HP

thats why i have those two mufflers as backpressure mufflers with a low tone to keep the pressure up, but not too much to affect the performance of the cars power. it has kept it stable and from what we did to the car it has not lost any performance. it has only gained. thats why i invested quite a bit. considering a cat exhaust with a straight through pipe only cost 35 bucks i paid quite a bit more than that. It was worth it.

I am planning on doing a full exhaust on my 94 also. Something like 01Rollas from the wrapped headers to the 2 and a 1/4 inch pipe going the whole way with a high flow cat, leaving the resonator on, a y pipe and some magnaflow mufflers and tips or just some cylinder magnaflow mufflers

You won't get any real gains in power until you go forced. Get your windows done. I just did mine on Sat. and I'm getting compliments on my car and it's completely stock, and has a banged up front fender!

250 bucks? tints cost less than half that, if u know where to go, talk to the guy who works at the shop(NOT the owner) and ask him if he does work on the side.

I agree on the tinting, local shop does it for $160 CAD and a guy that used to work there does it for $100 CAD on the side...

Here to get it done right, and warrantied it's $233 for the 7 windows in my corolla. The cost of living is higher here. A gallon of milk is $5. eh...

How did this go from exhaust to window tint? I paid 135 for my tint her in south texas.

I'd rather get the windows tinted that spend money on an exhaust that produced negligable gains.

if you are going to spend that ,much just buy some fenders,a hood,bodykit,or even a rear carbon fiber trunk lid. thats what on my list after i fix my engine.
