The best place to hook that remote wire is the remote-out on a head unit. That assumes you're not using the stock HU, if so, if you pull the center console out you can tap into the wire that goes to the accessory outlet. It's only hot when the key is on. Make sure you have a very low-amperage fuse in the line between where you tap and the amp, you don't want a short in that wire blowing something critical's fuse, and you sure don't need a fire in the passenger compartment.

If your amp works then cuts out while you're driving I would guess where you have the remote wire run to isn't the problem though. Lots else to look for, are you over-driving it in the inputs? Are you over-driving it on the outputs (like trying to feed a 1 ohm load in bridged mode)? Is there adequate ventalation around it, so it's not thermal-cycling protecting itself?

Sounds like you're overloading the amp and it's automatically shutting itself down. It turns back on when it's cooled off. Which amp is it?

For a breif period before my computer battery went we were IMing about this...his amp is under his driver's seat. I suggested he turn the AC on and set it to the foot position, get some cold air under that and see if it's overheating.

He also indicated he's using the speaker level inputs, fed by the stock HU. I said to him he may be overdriving it and needed to adjust the input sensitivity on the amp.

He could always try feeling the amp when it cuts out. If the heatsinks are hot then the amp is overloading.

By the way, the stock head unit does have a remote amp turn-on output. There's just no wire in the harness for it.

Before you solve the problem you have to figure out what the problem is first. We're trying to help and we're speculating that you are over driving the amp. We don't know that that's the problem. Turn down your gain and see if that helps. This might take a while to solve.

All MTX amps are Thunder something. How many channels does it have. Is it a mono class D amp?

    Re: no

Are you sure it turns off for a couple of minutes? or just a second or two?

When the amp shuts down, look for the PROTECTION MODE LED. If it's lit, feel the amp, if it's very warm, it's overloaded.

If it's not warm at all, and the PROTECT LED is ON, you have a short in your output wires.

If there is NO protection at all, check your power wires- They must be 8 awg to 4 awg.

Cutting in and out is usually a grounding/ power problem 80% of the time. Grounding is very important. Check it make sure its solid and just as thick wire or thicker than the power wire. Make sure all your power connections are secure. Also secure your amp so it isnt sliding all over the place.
