How's your radio reception now (worse than b4)? Personally, I wish Toyota would have integrated the antennas into the rear window like Camrys. I actually went the other direction and swapped my stock antenna with a VW buddy of mine (he was pretty happy to get a slightly shorter one). His was longer than the stock Corollas. Since the swap, fringe radio reception has improved. I just might buy one of these stubby ones for my Jetta if there's no difference in radio reception ...

Hey bimmernut, been wonderin where ya was!

Up here where I live there's but one radio station I'd listen to, alas, I'm old, and still like (what are now) the oldies...Sabbath, Zep, Lizzy, Cars, Heart, Queen, etc., the tower for that station is right here in town and I can get it with no antenna at all. We're kicking around moving to upstate Maine maybe next year, we visit up there every year and the stations are, uuummm, how to put nicely....lame? So I don't think I'd miss the antenna up there either. Just stick with good ol' CDs.

My father's Cad has the antenna taped to the inside of the windshield. He only listens to elevator music, so I don't really know how well it works. He says sometimes when he turns corners the signal will fade out breifly, I figure the A coloum is getting in the way.

Funny how that is... There's 100's of radio stations but I only channel surf thru 3 of them. Most of the time I just listen to CD's. Do know that the stock radio will play CD-RW's? Of course the stock radio/HU won't read MP3's, but you can burn songs (wav) onto a CD-RW for playback. I though this was pretty cool (since none of my other cars will read CD-Rw's)! Now I don't have to make senseless mix cd's for my commute. When I get sick of one, I'll just erase it and burn more songs onto it.

I didn't know that about the stock HU! I think maybe I asked too little when I sold mine on ebay

Have you considered one of those satellite radio services? There's gotta be at least a few stations everyone will like. When / if we move to Maine I'll have to consider that. It would be easier if there was some sort of try-b4-u-buy deal, maybe a satellite receiver that re-broadcasts onto a FM channel and plugs into the lighter socket (no permanent hookup). I'd feel a lot more comfortable shelling out the money for the setup if I knew I was going to like it.

From BMW... where else? j/k :D

Seriously though, BMW's with the sharfin antennas are cars equipped with the NAV systems. I think there's a better amplification device for signals and the wiring may not be the same... Most new BMW's use the equivalent of a fiber cable to carry most of the signals from the ECU to various other parts of the car (thereby cutting down on wire harnesses/looms). Also most new BMW's are tightly integrated with the ECU (many sensors) that travel along the same fiber like cable... can you say i-Drive? i-Drive suxs!

Good luck with a BMW sharkfin...

Paying for radio? What a crock! I bet the RIAA has their hand somewhere in satellite radio... Since radio is a "true public good" (free to everyone, at no cost) why pay for it? I like the concept, but sponsors should pay. I listen to netscape radio/spinner all day at work when I'm not in the middle of some boring meeting (I hope my boss isn't reading this! :D) or teleconference or scheduling/approving budgets for my projects... There's very few commercials and 100's of music channels (something for everyone), but the key is that it's free!

As for setup, I'm not hot on the black bubble that you would have to attach to your roof. Sure I've seen better installations that others, but I'm just not sold on the concept yet. Besides, XM or Sirius, one of the two is in bankruptcy....

I block Internet radio services (SurfControl) on my domain...it pulls a lot of bandwidth and if I let one person do it....

I'm not too opposed to paying for satellite radio. Like everything else in life, if you want the good stuff, ya gotta pay. If sponsors paid, we'd have to listen to feminine hygene product commercials every 12 minutes...aka Public Radio.

I guess I would have to agree with you on both points... (sat radio and internet radio) As for internet radio @ work, I have a very good relationship with one of the network guys, my peer is his boss... no port blocking on my box (or roaming profile), although I could have undone it myself (since I have admin priviledges)... but isn't that why network guys/gals have jobs? :)

grasshopper... you must pay for quality... OEM BMW parts are often better than their aftermarket cousins, since OEM BMW has to meet strict German TUV standards as well as US SAE/DOT ones too... This is why the M3 look-alike mirrors on eBay are not the same ones you'll see at the stealer. The "real" M3 mirrors are power (electric) and heated. You might want to call BMA Inc. (http://www.bmaautoparts.com/), a parts dealer that sells OEM BMW at a fair price, and ask them about mirror replacement parts for an E36 M3 or sidemarker lights... they also sell Toyota parts.

    An example of their discount...

E34 Lemforder (BMW OEM) thrust arms (a piece know to fail in these cars) goes for $280 at the stealer with a regular bushing pressed-in.

BMA sells the same thrust arms for $80 with a 750iL bushing (750iL bushing is more heavy duty and makes for tighter steering box)...

I'm sure the discount won't be as severe with Toyota parts since Toyota parts ultimately cost less....

hee hee...yeah, there's a couple people at work I let go pretty much where they want...I trust / respect their judgement. For the rest, Big Brother is Watching! Honestly the only deadly sin on my domain is internet-based e-mail. We can't afford virus protection for every desktop, if I let them hit mail.yahoo.com, and they pull in a mass-mailing worm, big problems We're a mental health facility, if our client files ever got mailed to the entire world...you get the picture.

You know , thinking about it, if the "oldies" I like were on a station that ran the "oldies" commercials, it wouldn't be too bad...anybody remember "plop plop fizz fizz?
