that on the stock/factory system, the sound of the radio isn't quite as amplified as the CD Player. i am planning on replacing my speakers but dont want to waste my money if its not going to help the situation much. also what can i do to improve theat other than changing my head unit.

A CD will always sound better than an over the air broadcast. Better speakers will help all of the above as will a new head unit & amp. I like clarity as opposed to all out thump. I installed a 50X4 Pioneer amp in my last car with 3 way speakers that reached down to 30HZ. It was crystal clear on the tuner, had plenty of clean bass and a CD sounded amazing. I realize that's a small amp by some standards but it was plenty for me. I replaced the stock head unit also. I'll likely leave the Corolla alone just because it's such a pain in the butt to change out the speakers.

I'll say replace the stock head unit first. After installing the Kenwood CD/MP3 player, it sounds much better and cleaner with stock speakers. FM is much better as well. It's a MUST before you replace the speakers.
