any one supplying more than 12.5 volts to their system?

    any one supplying more than 12.5 volts to their system?

    I'm curious to know if anyone here is giving their system 14.4 volts, and how they did it

    Are you referring to the 14.4 volts that most car stereo amplifier manufacturers spec their products at?

    I'm giving mine about 14 volts.

    I checked it with a multimeter. I'm getting about 14 volts at my amplifier.

    Are you powering straight off your battery? Is it only 14V while the engine is running?

    Just curious if that's the normal output of the alternator. If so, it would be the alternator powering your amp all the time, instead of the battery, I think.

    12v is the voltage output of your battery

    when you start the car, the Alternator takes over the charging system and the system voltage steps up to 14.4v

    take note, however that voltage(I) should not be confused with Amperes(A). Alternators are rated in Amperes (aka AMPS) All alternators produce 14.4v on idle, and depending on the car model, might have 50A 60A 100A, 120A, etc.

    To sum it all:

    engine is off = 12v
    engine is ON = 14.4v

    Used to be when the battery reached 13.6V, the regulator (do they even use that term anymore?) would cut the current to the battery, so you didn't boil off the electrolyte. If it' still works that way, while your battery was charging you'd see 14.4V across it's terms. When it doesn't want anymore, it should drop to 13.2 at the terms. But because the alternator is still spinning, the rest of your electrical system is still getting 14.4V.

    Like I said, this USED to be the case. Last time I crawled under a hood, smog controls were only for SoCal.... May be different now.

    This is helping me to figure out why car amp manufacturers still rate thier outputs at 14.4V.

    Think I'll get my DMM out and go play!
