    New head unit confusion

    I've never installed a head unit myself so here is my question. I bought a schoche wiring harness which has two plugs, and now it seems i see people are getting two sets of wiring harness things.. is that necessary? Doesnt the factory harness plug into the aftermarket one i bought and then that plugs into the harness that comes with the aftermarket head unit?? i dont see why you would need two sets of plugs? Also whats the best way to remove the factory cd player.. I've read that you can do it by removing the glovebox or something and also by taking off everything in that region first..

    You need two sets of plugs if you are keeping the factory head unit. If you are putting in an aftermarket head unit, you only need the one to connect to the factory wiring harness. Your new head unit should come with its own harness. You just have to connect the two harnesses together.

    Thanks.. but I'm still confused, i'm sure it will make more sense when i pull apart my dash and look at it, i'll be doing that this weekend when i get my deck.
    But my question now is this.. The original factory head unit has its own plug that goes into it right.. and then the harness i bought plugs into that to plug, and then i get some crimps and crimp the matching wires to my new head units wiring harness that plugs into the head unit right.. So why would anyone need a wiring harness to plug in the factory cd player that is already plugged in? if you wanted to switch back to the original cd player couldnt you just take off the aftermarket harness and replug it into the oem cd player.. Or do you mean that you could install another cd player also? that doesnt make any sense either though.. another one wouldnt fit and i dont think that would work..

    you are thinking too hard! to install the factory decj again you would just unplug the aftermarket harness and plug the stock harness back into the cd player. You can even install ANY sterio you want withought the pther harness, but would require a lot of time, and a multimeter and lots of trial and error. Thats why its worth it to pay the $7 for the narness.

    It will all make sens when you open it up. Trusrt us

    yeah thats what i had just stated.
    yeah i know, lots of people do it this way, with older cars anyways.. and you normally dont need a digital mutlimeter unless you have no clue what any of the wires are.. i would never do it that way though.
    i was just wondering why people were talking about using two different wiring harnesses.. i cant figure out the piont.. unless you were getting one specific for your deck so you didnt have to crimp any wires at all.. i think i've seen those before but they are much to expensive to be worth it.

    Originak Factory Harness : Aftermarket Harness : New Head Unit Harness

    ==========] : [=========== : ==========]

    So yes, you only need to buy the aftermarket harness.

    Why is it confusing?

    Circuit City sold me two harnesses...one is SONY specific on one side (obviously I have a Sony HU), generic on the other. The second harnesss was generic on one side, TOYOTA on the other. They just plugged all together pretty slick.

    Never did it this way b4 either...always got a single piece, TOYOTA on one side, pigtails to be soldered to the pigtails that come with the HU.

    Plus and minus to both...don't mind soldering, but the two-piece eliminated that , eliminated the chance of me pulling a calcium-cranium on the wiring, and was a lot quicker. But, the two-piece makes for a LOT of cable (and a extra connector) to try and tuck neatly behind the HU. The extra 7 bucks for the second piece didn't really hurt, but still, it could have gone into future mods...

    those circuit city smart connect cables is very true in the sense of makin wiring for the average person very easy but to a person like me, nothin beats a good old soldering job. y? cuz, on the smart cables, there is no line fuse. i rather do a solder job and keep the line fuse in which my hu came with. i work at the cc so, its all good, i buy the smart cables, then cut and solder em to the hu wires.

    Good point, didn't even think of there being no fuse on the smart cable. Fortunately on my new HU the fuse is stuck in the back of the HU itself,,.but now that you got me thinking about it, my last HU (a Pioneer), the fuse was in the pigtails.
