    Check Engine Code Reader

    Anybody know a place to get a good reader?

    AutoZone may do it for free...but I'd much rather be able to plug my own jack in and read the code that pops out.

    I saw a reading in the canadian tire flyer the other day. was something like $300... but it looked really fancy.

    Is it vehicle/make specific, or will it read any error code a computer puts out on any vehicle?

    ...and if the answer to the above question is yes...how do you like it? Worth the money?

    It's generic. I have the older version of this http://www.actron.com/product_detail.php?pid=16298

    and yes.. these are OBD-II only. which was in all vehicles by 96. although my 94 mustang had it back in the day.

    I ended up buying an AutoXray diagnostic tool because the codes weren't even triggering on the mustang (btw, autoxray sucks).. but I've yet to use the code reader or diagnostic tool on any toyotas we have :D but the diagnostic tool lets you record sensor data/view data, etc.. but it costed me like $350 :shutup:

    the group buy for the ScanGuage will read the codes and much more. It's OBD-2 and works on pretty much all vehicles after 96. It was about $100.

    Used an Actron to decode the problem on my '03...seemed to work pretty well, with easy to use interface, including both a code reader and a "translator" that quickly told you the definition of the code.

    Anybody have any comments on Actron?

    i got mine from ebay for around 80 USD

    it gives you CEL code + all the sensor data
    you can also turn the CEL off with it
