yeah, we pay big prices. What makes it so attractive is the fact that the parts are completely legal, plus, we get to put mods on our brand new car without worrying about warranty issues!!!!! After all, these high performance parts are provided by a division of Toyota (TRD). That is why people buy them. I don't mind paying the big bucks to get it, if it means keeping my warranty intact.

It allows us a chance to buy an affordable car and the freedom to add stuff to it. Some of us still cannot afford those Evo's or STi's, but a Corolla is within most people's grasp.

TRD is not a division of Toyota - it is a completely seperate company that is to some extent endorsed by Toyota. When you install a TRD part, your Toyota warranty is voided, but TRD will replace Toyota's warranty with their own. Only problem is that when you buy the car you are also buying a warranty. When the warranty is voided, Toyota doesn't give you that money back, but you get to pay TRD a hefty sum for the new part plus a new warranty. TRD is a smart move if you don't mind paying twice for a warranty. It's quite a cash cow for both Toyota and for TRD - the consumer is the only real loser.

wow, that is very surprising. I didn't know that. I wonder why the service advisor told me that TRD was division of Toyota in which they provide the dealer with optional performance parts.

Maybe that is why parts are so expensive, when in fact, we may be paying for the warranty. But then again, the service advisor told me that everything on my car is still covered under my contract (75,000 miles) bumper to bumper warranty even though I have all those TRD stuff on. One of the guys told me that if anything was wrong, I can just bring it on in, and as long as my vehicle is still covered under warranty, they won't charge me anything. I can understand if I have to pay after that due to warranty expiration. Are they not telling me the whole story, or just trying to rip me off?

i dont think that is true. toyota created TRD as a high performance aftermarket add-on. in japan TRD is big among the Toyota line up. its just like mugen and nismo. they are all warrenty by the corporation. other wise TRD is just a waste of money if it was on its own. Toyota already created Factory install division for the bB and the Ist.

I thought so. It is a good move by Toyota to do this because of the competitive nature for aftermarket speed equipment.

Toyota refers to TRD as an "affiliate". I think they keep the line blurry on purpose. If you read TRD's warranty carefully, youll see that they are in fact covering the TRD part installed plus any other damages related to the faulty TRD part - Toyota won't cover that. It gets even more complex. When a TRD part is installed by a Toyota dealer, the dealer gives a 90 day warranty - for the first 90 days, the dealer's warranty covers any failures, after that it's the TRD warranty. Toyota dealers are also affiliates and are not generally owned by Toyota, so how the dealer deals with warranty issues will vary from dealer to dealer.
