    Stock Head Unit Specs?

Any idea what the stock head unit specs are? I'm wanting to compare them to a few CD players to see how much of a difference a new head unit would really make. I looked in the owners manual, but couldn't find anything about the actual RMS/peak.

Considering that the stock speakers can only handle 17 watts a piece, I'm guessing that Toyota wouldn't go any higher than that on rms. There's no question about it, replacing the stock head unit is a must.[/b]

I'm curious. How did you acquire the 17 watt RMS info? We believe that Panasonic manufactures the original head unit.

The speakers are stamped 17.5 Watts on the back. The fronts are 4 Ohms, the back are 6 Ohms. The head unit is made by Matsushita Communications (Panasonic is their most famous brand name).

The stock head unit uses dual AB class amplifiers for each channel running out of phase, yeilding a peak voltage output of maybe 13 volts, or 9.2 volts RMS. Into a 6 ohm load, this means 14.5 Watts RMS (29 Watts peak) and into a 4 Ohm load about 21 Watts (42 Watts peak).

The power output of the stock head unit is about the same as after market units advertised as 40 watts per channel. However the stock head unit is not very linear (leading to lots of distortion) and the slew rate is slow (yielding poor high end response).

No, it doesn't. If it has it, then my car would already have sounds... The HU doesn't even have any wire on it (some cars' HUs do) and the other side to the car is too far away to split the wires for speaker level or RCA conversion...

Well, got a new Alpine CDA-9805 installed yesterday. It sounds a little different, that might just be me though. It's easy to see that the speakers are crap... I can turn the new unit up to about 12 and the speakers start to distort big time. So, I'm wanting new speakers now... :D I like the new headunit though, looks much better than the old bulky thing.

Im looking into new head unit and subs and amp as well. I might keep the factory speakers in though and see how they sound when a sub is attached. Cause if you get an amp with built in crossover it will take all the bass away from those speakers and put it all to the subs so then your speakers are doing mids and highs. But IM not sure if it will be decent or not I would think it would be hard to blow those speakers if you got just mids and highs going to them. Any suggestions?

    speakers

I plan on installing the audio system soon in my 03 Corolla. I decided to just keep on the stock speakers but am wondering if I should buy new speakers all together. Personally I think the stock speakers are fine but just wondering what you guys think.

I will be using a Sony Xplod HU with a Rockfors Amp plus 2 "12 Krankenstein Subs.
