    The end may be near

Well, I think it might be time for me to get out of my corolla and into something a little more fun.
I am just getting tired of not being able to get the parts that I want (and for a reasonable price), and an engine swap being a little more than I want to pay. But the thing that really pisses me off is the complete lack of power in my corolla, and it being an auto tranny.

Engine swap would be apparently about $1,400+ (from dr. tweak) + engine cost (~1,300USD for a 4AGZE front clip) + me driving all the way to dr tweak's shop (or locally, if I could find someone reliable) and costs for the trip (gas etc/etc). Whereas for me to drop in a new engine in a CRX, the tranny would be free, engine about $500 for a nice one, and wiring and labour about $300.

I am thinking of selling it (only has about 120,000 km's on it [~75,000 miles)]) as is (custom interior and everything, maybe part some stuff out if anyone here really wants it (though I dont have much)) and getting a CRX or something like that, and drop in a newer engine. Should be able to break even with a decent CRX or maybe even a HB civic (for the cargo area). Though I may shy away from the CRX becuase of the winter here - need something with a little more winter traction than that, and my corolla barely is enough as it is [stock].

Just hope that I can get enough for my corolla to get something that is fun and fast enough (honda parts around here are cheap as hell, plus my neighbor is a honda tech and is always doing engine swaps/etc for friends)

That being said, I'm not completely throwing the towel right now, just been getting really pissed off lately with it...

So you want to sell your rolla because it's "auto" and "lack of power" and use the money to get a CRX or civic??? You think with the money you get form the rolla can get you a "better power" CRX or Civic??
Maybe you should think about a 240 or G2 teggy.

Haha hell no, it wouldnt be a stock engine.
I just finished some of grease monkey work with my neighbor on one of his crx's a couple weeks ago. amazing acceleration and excellent power.
No, I wouldnt keep a stock crx engine in there or anything along those lines, it would be swapped out and running within a couple days.

Yea the 240 is nice. I actually can fit comfortably into them, lots of let room. The G2 integra is also an option, but those are hard to come by around here.

    no, that's next tuesday.

Well on the crx that we just finished last week, minus the cost of the car, total cost came to $1000 for a pristine engine with 20,000km's on it, never abused, all the work (wiring and swap was done by neighbor and me helping and learning).
    And damn does it pull.

Bottom line is that I am sick of flooring my engine just to merge and speed up a reasonable amount. As it is right now, unless I can find a silver/blacktop or 4agze for really cheap and someone to help me with wiring, it's not cost effective to go that route.
Of course if I had a little more cash I would buy a newer corolla, but I am going into dentistry next year, and that's $130,000.

the weekly world news says its going to split in two in 2 weeks... ok so not to steal the thread... I like CRX's I looked at one before I bought the rolla but thought long and hard about it and decided I'd be spending the same amount of money on it to get it up tho where the rolla is right now and then I would still drive a honda... so I decided agenst it.. but hey good luck to you... hope you still hang out here... I would miss your avatar too much... GO preschool millhouse.

Dood with the only Civic I'd EVER go with is a 96-00 Si. Those are the only civics that u can get for well not too cheap but like mid range prices and good power. CRX is crap unless u do major work to them. For power u might wanna get a Prelude or an Accord they're somewhat fast and reliable

Yea nothing is in stone right now. I'll have to do some research and find out what my final cost is going to be either way. Options are:

    1. Keep the car and live with it
    2. Keep the car but swap out an engine and manual conversion
    3. Keep the car and buy a crotch rocket... if I can find the money somewhere
    4. Sell it, and buy a honda (CHEAP engine and parts here) and swap out to something with some power.

Oh and of course I'll stick around. I'm usually here for the general auto (non-corolla specific) information.

Yea. "out of the box", I dont like civics that much for power. However one of my neighbor's CRX's ran 11 last week, without anything more than new coilovers, engine, and turbo (all custom tubing he did himself, took most of the parts from another car his brother wrecked).

alright, heres the thing, as far as im concerned, I agree with wanting to get rid of the corolla for something better, but for me, something better means something RWD or AWD. Getting another FWD economy car (Civic or CRX) is by no means an upgrade.

well, here's mine opinion. keep the corolla, and work your ass off to get enough money, and buy a new car. sell the corolla and get something else.

I already work as much as I can now.
Work during the day, but have commitments in the evening (no, not a girlfriend, or something lame that I could easily get out of).
Plus the money problem really lies in my tuition next year, which I have to pay myself ... totalling $38,000

But I still think that selling the rolla and get a crx/civic isn't a upgrade at all. :p
If your neighbor do all the custom work to this crx on his own, I believe he can help you do the same thing on your rolla too. Since it's all custom, it doesn't matter if it's rolla or crx.

Yeah, that is a lot, I'm going to a community college to avoid those prices. . .

You should try to get the guy involved in Toyotas, not just civics. Have you brought your car over to have him check it out and see if he can do anything?

Yea he's done some toyota's before, but said he wouldnt really want to do the wiring for one again.
The real problem is the price of an engine out here. I can order a blacktop or eve na 4agze off ebay for $1000 (blacktop) or $1300 (4agze) and then another 200-300 for shipping here. so at the worst its 1300 or 1600 USD for an engine, then I would have to get someone to do the wiring (neighbor wont do it :(). That's about $300CDN here. Whereas I can get about $6000 (yes, not a problem getting that much), and then pick up a CRX for 5g, spend less than $1000 on a swap with a low km engine. Almost break even like that, instead of spending $2000 that I dont really have, on an engine for my rolla.

On another note, that CRX that we finished off yesterday... had to refinish today. minor problem. Took it out for a couple drags here (back roads, I live in the country). FAST AS HELL!
A FAR cry from what my corolla can do -> 0-60: maybe in 15 seconds, downhill, wind at my back. lol

I can see where you're coming from, but having just test drove the car we just finished, there is a HUGE improvement changing from my rolla

    Here's the latest:
Bought a CRX today (going to pick it up in toronto next week, has been test driven by 'my people' out there :D). comes with a ton of spare parts (and wheels and rims and tank, and rad etc etc: cant fit it all in the car).
    It's in excellent condition.
Going to hold onto the corolla for now for sure, maybe make it my daily driver and the crx just for more fun. have a b18 lined up to drop in when i get back (driving back from brampton,ON).
At the worst, the corolla will go to my sister, but I'll probably hang onto it.

i understand completely....ive been at the brink of selling and probably will be again lol

i duno, i just have so much love for my rolla... i learned so much shit with it, and the fact that im one of like 3people in a 100 mile radius with a modded one adds to the "cool" factor...well...as cool as u can get with a corolla anyway

:) yea there's really not many people around here with a corolla, so it's kinda neat having one that is a little different, even though I barely have anything done to it.

The only problem is that I have more spare parts to bring back from Toronto than I have room in the car for, still have to figure out how I am goign to deal with that...

I would gladly deal with that problem. You could always try shipping the parts you can't fit.

Well as for tuition I have a line of credit lined up, and going to negotiate interest to below prime (its set at prime now) for $150,000.
That will get me through alright.

After getting on the phone with my dad today trying to figure our some of whats going to happen with shipping etc etc (which really was going to cost me a ton of money), I got two pieces of great information.
One, I just got a "raise" on my scholarship, a couple extra thousand for the summer, which makes the shippment much easier to make.
Then about 2 minutes later I got a call back from my dad saying that my uncle could ship the car for me for only a couple hundred bucks (he buys cars for a local group of dealerships, so it'll just get put on a train and be here in about a week or more. :)

Honda = Ford, in the sense that there are tons of parts for them
Toyota = Chevrolet lots of parts but hard to find, but in the long run pays off
This is my opinion and for me anything that says honda civica, crx or accord just tells me its too common. The good thing is that you are driving something that you are better suited to.Yes I have an accord, its good but when ford had a joint process in manufacturing the tranny it just screams "I suck". The car has been though three tranny's and is now on it fourth one. If I ever buy a honda again it will be a 97 or below since in 98 they made some here in the us and the reliability had gone down substantially. Some of the other honda models were made in japan the current accord is made in Maysville, OH. I have now learned my lesson. Like i said this is my opinion and do not not mean to offend anyone, its just an experience that I have had with my car.
