Lexus cancels next-gen SC, Toyota cancels next Avalon

Sales of the bulbous Lexus SC 430, one of the vehicles that kick-started the current hardtop convertible fad in the U.S., have slowed so significantly that Toyota's luxury brand has reportedly canceled its replacement. The four-place, V8-powered, rear-wheel-drive vehicle never fit well into any specific niche, as it boasted neither the sportiness of the ragtop Jaguar XK and Porsche 911, nor the snob appeal of the BMW 6 Series. Through the first six months of this year, Lexus sold only 1,230 SC's, down 40% from last year. What fans the Lexus sport coupes/convertible does have need not worry, however, as the brand will be launching the much more potent (and substantially more impressive) LF-A supercar at some point in the future.

According to Inside Line, the SC isnt the only Toyota product without a future. The Avalon entry-level Buick luxury sedan is also on the chopping block. Fans of the boring unpretentious Avalon can instead look forward to an extended-length version of the Camry sedan to take its spot in Toyota's U.S. lineup.

The new Camry better be the Auron from Australia. :) I would get one of those, but then again, it won't have the supercharger if it comes here. :(

lol...avalon probably doesnt even cost much to make, its essentially a GS underneath. As long as the GS sells, shouldnt cost much to make an avalon. And the SC, it used to be great, then they made it a chick car, I was hoping to see a nice coupe return but it looks like there are no more toyota coupes left except for *gasp* scion tc. New toyotas suck for life.

We'll see if the new LF-A and Subaru joint project will save them.

it won't save them.. Toyota needs to come out with a new hybrid that will rediculously blow away all competition. The rumored Corolla Prius is said to get 80-100mpg plus has a electric only mode which will drive about 100 miles from an over night charge... saw it on some Japanese forum .. i can't remember where though.. I'm also interested to see the sienna prius

now is the time that Toyota should export the Crown and/or Majesta to replace the Avalon. these sedans are much better looking, preform better and the hybrid models are already out as well.

i doubt the crown would ever make it to the states. Americans would screw up the image of what the crown is supposed to represent.
