The reason why I don't buy lug nuts with splint style key

This is the reason why I don't use lug nuts that have the splint keys:

    THEY ARE FRAGILE!!!
I had these lugnuts for almost 2 years and since then I have brought 3 replacement lug nut keys. I have never had any problems with my old set of lug nuts that used a allen wrench hex shaped key that I've used for about 8 years.

But with these...The first one got rounded out AND cracked from tire shops using impact wrenchs. Then, the next one I got I realized that the stock lugnut wrench is a big NO NO when using these keys because it is almost impossible to properly support the key when tighening or loosening them. I had to buy a big breaker bar style lug nut wrench so I can get enough leverage and support on the key when loosening or tightening. This key rounded out from the short stock lugnut wrench. The last one I bought only to have it crack on me for no reason when untightening the lugnuts after less than 10 uses.

Get any other key except these! They cost $10-$15 each to replace. And once you rounded one out or cracked one, you are stuck unless you have a spare key. So remember to be careful if you have one of these keys and you get a flat somewhere.

Yeah, the thing with my particular rims is that I HAVE to use those lugnuts since they are the short style that will clear my centercap. Nobody else makes short lugnuts that does not use the splint type keys. I wish someone will make the short lugnuts using different key. Oh well, right now I am running without centercaps. :)

I think it's the shops using them with impact wrenches that ruins them. Tell them to use a torque wrench by hand.

Fortunantely, mine are still OK - granted, they are pretty fragile - not a whole lot of "meat" on those type of adapters.

I would have chewed out the shop for running an impact on those wheels. Torque specs are only like 75-77ftlbs for most alloy wheels.

I'm so glad that my wheel key is an actual impact socket.

Yeah, so here's my solution. I modified my wheel's centercap to accept the long tuner lugnuts that does not use the splint style keys. All I did was take a Dremel rotary tool to cut around the centercap. VIOLA! I should file the edges smooth, but I doubt anyone is going to be close enough to see nor do I plan to enter in any carshows lol.
