how much did you pay for it and is it really worth going for 1.4 over the 1.8? i am looking to buy a 50mm, but not sure if i want to spend the extra money on the 1.4.

    CHEAP! I got the 50mm 1.4f + a 28mm 2.8f for about $300 from a from a good friend.;)

It's nice to have but for if it wasn't for a great deal I'd settle for the 1.8f.

I think the 1.8f is good. But it all depends on what you want to use it for. I'm in the works on getting a 1D Mark III and the only lens I have that'll fit it is the 50mm 1.8f. I guess that prime will do for now. but everyone swears by that lens (50mm 1.8f and the 1.4f). Now I guess I'll really find out why..lol.

is there any real benefit going with the AF-S lens versus going with a lens that uses the camera to focus? they seem to be about $200 more. i will be using it for indoor family pics and to me it doesn't make sense to spend that much, but i don't know much about picking out a lens.

Well, if your camera body doesn't have AF featyre then either shell out the extra $200+ so you'll have AF. If not, you're fine with the older non-AF model. What body do you have?

A prime 50mm indoors is too close unless the subject isn't moving too much it's a relatively roomy space to work with.
