the cost of gas has not gone up a "few" dollars since a year ago. It has gone up that much over the last 3-5 years.

will use this link as an example, whether it is a 100% accurate i have no idea
    http://www.eia.doe.gov/oil_gas/petroleum/data_publications/wrgp/mogas_home_page.html

since this was mainly a corolla message board i will use that as an example. i know trucks and other cars have bigger tanks.

corolla has a 13.2 gallon fuel tank. i am guessing the reserve comes on after going through about 11.2 gallons +/-, but for this we will assume we are putting in a full 13 gallons

    using florida prices
cost of gas a year ago for 13 gallons: 38.58 at 2.968 a gallon
cost of gas today for 13 gallons: 47.01 at 3.616 a gallon

that is a difference of 8.43 (on the absolute high side). people waste more then that eating out. i am in no way happy about the price of gas and considering where the price of gas was when clinton was in office to now is horrible. people should already expect the fluctuations and calculate that into the budget. gas last year in june or july hit over $4 a gallon for premium. i drive an fj also which gets 17-18 mpg on a 19 gallon tank and takes premium. I bought it a year ago knowing this already and it is figured in my budget.

And youre paying about 70 bucks to fill that FJ up. I know because I have a Trailblazer that has a 22 gallon tank.

Premium in November around here was at 3 bucks. Now its at 4.10. One year ago it was 2.70ish. So a 1.40 dollar difference. 15 gallon tank.....21 bucks more to fill it up. 21X12=252 bucks more a month. And thats one of our cars.

When we first bought the trailblazer, it was costing about 35-40 bucks to fill up. Now its over 70. 280 more to fill up.

280+252=530 bucks more a month to fill up the cars. (And thats a low number, because Im not using prices from 2 years ago in the passat figures. So its even higher)

Its not a big deal to me and my family budget wise, but yeah, we see the difference.

i live in the state with one of the higest gas taxes in the country i think that they goverment should have one tax free day on gas just to help a tiny bit but i know that it would cause major funding problems if they did that

Gas tax holiday wouldve been for fed taxes, not state taxes. And a one day "holiday" would save you about 2 dollars.

Gas tax holiday was a political/election year gimmick, plain and simple.

And your high state taxes on gasoline doesnt correlate to higher gas prices at the pump for you.

ikonXone - sure, it can be worked into the budget for most people - but, take my mother for example - 3 kids still at home, single parent, one income...she can't absorb that $100-300/mo as easily as many other families can.

Luckily for the FJ it's only a 19 gallon tank and reserve comes on at 4 gallons. Haven't hit $4 a gallon yet for premium, but when it does it will take about $60 to fill up and that will be once a week, but usually only fill it up about every 10-12 days. i guess with only having two cars and have limited travel in vegas, i don't see that big of a jump.

kids are a choice not an excuse along and come with a tax break. one of the many reasons i am waiting to have kids is to make sure inflation won't hurt my pocket.

Whos using it as an excuse? 10 years ago gas was 89 cents.
And if youre waiting to have kids to make sure inflation wont hurt your pocket, isnt that contradicting the point you were trying to make above?

Yeah, shame on his mom for not thinking that gas prices would quadruple when she was having kids 10+ years ago.

    Arrogance or ignorance? Or both?

I would have kids based on my love for having them and not based on monetary issues. That's messed up.

So some kids these days are up and about just because they gave their parents a tax break?! That's FUCKED up. Excuse my language, but I just had to say it.

lol, around here, some girls start having kids early....in order to collect WIC, AFDC and other government benefits. I'm not joking about that. It's usually the ones whose mothers did the exact same thing with them.

Why work when you can sit at home, collecting benefits for everything from food to housing and daycare subsidies?

yeah having kids for taxes it messed up and i have met people that do that and i dont have much respect for them at all. Even though gas prices going up since i have a corolla i dont mind to much i commute to my college so i drive about 150-200 miles a week which isnt bad. I thought about getting a bike with a 500 or 650 cc engine but insurance and the cost would offset the gas prices it would take like 2 or 3 years after buying a bike before I start saving gas money on it. Also for some ppl that think of buying a hydrogen car to create the hydrogen it takes for oil and creates more greenhouse gases then having a gas engine car. So with oil on the rise expect the hydrogen price tag to increase as well. Honestly look at diesel cars that you can run off used cooking oil sounds dumb and odd but i think that might be the best way to go within the next five years.

actually alot of familys here do that. they're mexican, they think by having more kids they get government help, which the actuall state of texas does help. food stamps, wic, lowers there taxes if they own, provides housing if they dont, lowers there utility bills, lots of stuff. also a big thing down here is that you can claim kids and get a bigger tax refund, that is the main reason down here!!!

like i always say about kids "if they came to early, so did you!"

oh but know i think they cant just be layin on their asses anymore they have to work to get benifits.

There is a valid point in that illegal immigrants do use our tax laws to their advantage. Just like I know there are hospitals in Texas where they do not ask if you are legal and they have to provide you with help. They use this primarily for giving birth. Not sure on how it works but I think it goes if you have a baby here in the states and you are illegal your child is a US citizen. Stuff like that makes me pretty mad

The child gets to stay, but the parent has to be deported. I remember an illegal immigrant fighting to stay with her child in the US saying something that it was her right. BS She's illegal. She has no rights. They really need to change the law on that. If illegal immigrants have children in the US, the immigration status of the parents should reflect on the child as well. Deport them both! :twocents:

If you're born here, I'm almost positive you're automatically a US citizen.
