I'm going to get off work early and get my valve stem replaced, so the donut will go back in the trunk by the end of today. :)

I'll have to replace my tires too. Two of the tires are bald to the point where no more tread exists. One of those has a wire sticking out, so I'm kind of worried. The other two tires still have about 25% tread left. I'm thinking I should just change them all out anyways. I'll be installing RAYS Engineering black anodized valve stems as well. Like I said, I'm sick of having the cheap rubber stems from ripping prematurely and leaving me stranded with a flat.

Valve stems split for 3rd time

They split on me again. I lost all tire pressure on the front right tire on the freeway on the way home from work. UGH!!! I'm sick and tired of having valve stems fail me over and over. Will metal valve stems be stronger and permanent solutions for this? I've seen metal versions of the rubber which I still don't trust, since the bottom is still mostly rubber and the the long metal stem can act as leverage to snap it off. I'm leaning toward the flush mounting valve stems... I really don't have time to fix my tire. I might have to miss school to take care of it. How long can I run on my donut spare? And at what speeds?

the spare is remarkingly good until u hit a pothole or any big bump. You can do 40 with it easy and saftly. Just avoid unnecessary hits to it, that steel changes shape easily.

Change it by the end of the week at least.

Do you still have to replace these aluminum valve stems every tire change? It seems that the rubber is just replaced since people spend big bucks on these and they want to keep them.

nah, kept them. if the guy who change my tires took these out and put some rubber ones in i'd start yelling at him for being a idiot. I even take off the valve stem caps before handing over the rims.

actually on second thought I never had problems with the rubber ones on my steelies either.

I think it could be due to the wheel design or maybe the harsh ride. What psi do you inflate your tires to?

I have no idea why I have this problem. It's very annoying since I have to literally take half the day off to get it fixed. I never had this problem when I had steelies as well...

maybe someone in the neighborhood doesnt like you lol jk. with my old car i had a problem with my valve stems. one split on me last summer on my way home from one of my friends houses .. problem was that the valve stems were too long and extended past the rim and i guess just from parking too close to curbs and maybe rocks just split it over time. I got very short valve stems and havnt had a problem since

dont know if that would help but solved my problem.:)

I'm guessing they just got old, dry and cracked from the heat. It's only occurred on the front drive wheels where the power is going to. They should be replaced as often as one replaces tires, but I didn't expect them to give out before the tires did.

    Noob question:
What cause the valve stems to split?
I had one valve stem split on me long time ago but I didn't know the reason for it.

its got to be the rim design. I didn even know they split till this thread. i thought that the whole "the rim is designed specifically for this car" was a buncha bull. Maybe it is true.

Well, I ordered black anodized aluminum valve stems, so this splitting problem won't be a problem anymore.

I love the design. Once these are installed with my new tires, I won't be losing air pressure as fast anymore.
