4age eh? ..

The blue top was one of the weakest 4AGs (115 hp), although very technologically advanced and powerful for that time period. From the listing, it says GTS and then SR5. Which one is it? It can't be both. A GTS would have the 4AG. The SR5 if I remember correctly had an 8 valve, SOHC, 90 hp, carburated 4A-C motor.

yea, the one shown is the bluetop. much better than the 4a-c but still as everyone else ahs said is weak. you'd know if it was carb'd because the airfilter would stick up and block alot (also, the valve cover would only have one raised point instead of two). also, since its rear disk brakes its a gts.... sr5's came with drums in the rear. good, fun car but needs to check suspension and body rust. if thats all good id say hop on that before i do.... my coupe needs a buddy

that looks more like a 4ag if it was single cam it wouldnt have the 2 valve covers just one small one

Your right about the blue top 4age. It was weak due in part to it having the 3 ribed cast iron block. But when it comes to building a serious 4age with massive power, allot of guys choose the 4age blue top head, also known as the large port, due in part to it have large ports which can be good when you are running large amounts of boost. The next series of this engine was what is called the 4age red/black top. This engine had red and black lettering on the valve cover instead of the blue and black lettering. The red/black top was an improvment over the blue top due to it having the updated 7 rib black which was allot stronger. It still had large ports and it still had the TVIS. After the red/black top, came the red top. The red top had smaller intake ports then the blue and red/black top. The smaller ports allowed it to respond a lot quicker to input and the TVIS went away on this model. There was also a supercharged version of the red top. After the red top came the silver top 20 valve which had VVT. The 20 valve had pretty much the same beefed up internals as the supercharged 4age. The intake ports were set at a steeper angle then the regular 4age (this was also done on the 93-97 4afe & 7afe), this help with air flow to the three intake valves. It also marked the first production toyota engine to utilize individual throttles for each cylinder. The finale version of the 4age was the black top. The black top gained cylinder head improvments over the silver top and had lighter internals which allowed it to rev up to around 10,000 rpm. There are allot of differances between the different series of these engines, to much to list here but you can find allot of info buy searching. If you purchase a AE86, take a look at putting a 3sge Beams engine, out of the JDM Altezza IS250, in it. I saw a guy in a tuner mag a few years back that did this, but he turbo charged it as well. Now you can puchase the 3sgte Beams engine out of the JDM MR2 and Celica, but you have to deal with the whole tranny issue. If you go with the 3sge Beams out of the Altezza, you can get the rear wheel drive tranny with to. The 3sge Beams has dual VVT-i and throws down 210-220 hp stock. As you may not know, I worship the 3sge/3sgte engine and honestly believe it was one of the best peformance tuned engines ever produced by toyota, with the exception of the 2jzge/2jzgte found in the Supra and the Lexus SC 300, GS 300 and the IS 300. If you really want to get serious with the AE86, put the 2jzgte in it. The 2jzgte has been installed in AE86s before.

It has the blue top 4age with the weak a** 3 rib cast iron block. In 1987 they came out with the red/black top, same cylinder head as the blue top, but it had the stronger 7 rib cast iron block. Both still had the crappy TVIS.

hmmm interesting. I had no idea the blue top head had bigger ports.

Actually there is like 8 ports. You can see the intake manifold has 8 intake pipes going into the engine. It's kinda weird.

There are eight small circular runners on the blue top and the red/black top intake manifold. This is due to TVIS (Toyota Variable Intake System) which did what the VVT-i does now, but in a different way. There are not eight seperate intake ports on the head.
