Do I Need Aftermarket Shocks?

I got my car lowered today...Teins S-Tech, which i believe is a 1.5 Drop. But right now it's on stock shocks. Some ppl told me that its ok with stock shocks cuz the corolla is light and s-techs are made for stock shocks...
but then theres also someone that told me that they're known for blowing up ur shocks, which kinda scared me

my gas mileage is about 64000
and its a 2000 car, u guys think i need aftermarket shocks?

if so, what brand do u recommend
i just want it to be as cheap and reliable as possible, it doesnt has to be those adjustable ones that i cant afford. ]=

Springs are never made for stock shocks. As long as the spring ratio is stiffer, it will put excessive pressure on the stock strut that wasn't designed for that extra. They will blow early. Cheap and reliable just isn't possible. Haven't you heard the saying: "Fast and cheap won't be reliable. Cheap and reliable won't be fast. And fast and reliable won't be cheap." Ok, substitute fast for something else. LOL Get KYB GR2's for a more stock feel and Tokicos for a more sporty feel(although they do tend to blow out early). A full set of struts will be around 3-400. Around 200 if you're lucky.

yo dude, i have some tokico blues. they're only for the front. they're brand spankin new, never been used or installed. you'll need to get rear ones on your own. they were 103.88 as listed on

i still have my s-techs on stock shocks but need to get new ones. but the ride isn't that bad only a bit bouncy

no, i just lowerred my car yesterday and this entire week it's been raining like shit in LA so i havent gotten the chance to take a pic of it outside, i'll take some tomorrow morning.

but damn only 250 miles? i get around 200-220 miles and it's only at half..

Yup, it's recommended to change to an aftermarket struts when you lower your car.

I get 300-350 usually. I might occasionally get really close to 400. I hit it once or twice before.

Because I'm not sure if my gas gauge is reading it correctly. Every time I think I'm empty, I fill it up and the pump stops at 8gal. Haha.

Well my engine needs to be rebuilt .... bad .. only time i get good gas mileage is on long road trips .. my local gas mileage sucks ..

lol my bad, i meant total milage of the car in general.

i dont know my 'gas milage' cuz i dunno how to calculate it, the last time i pumped a full tank...it had in 10.26 gallon, which costed me about 32 bucks, damn.

Now you need a TRD spoiler. Good luck! btw, the TRD side skirts would sit a lot lower than the front lip, since the front lip doesn't add any width to the bumper. You're better off with a set of OEM Corolla S skirts.

just to clarify if im right...will those shocks make it more stiff so the ride isnt as bouncy over bumps and such? and...also, would a front strut bar also make a difference?

KYB GR2's are OEM replacement... So don't expect it to be stiff. But you'd probably feel the difference just because your stock shocks are already old and tired.

What I'm saying is OEM brand new Toyota struts and a brand new KYB GR2's wouldn't be much of a difference.

Depends on what strutbar you are getting. The TRD one makes small but noticeable difference.

Once again, TRD parts like the strut bar are hard to find. Just get a generic bar. What you get out of a strut bar really doesn't justify overpaying for one.

then what do you think is the best solution to make it less bouncier?

You should be fine with KYB's. If you're really worried that it's going to be too bouncy, try the stiffer Tokico's.
