    Recent conversation with ksport

jcrwzr: can you help me out with a technical issue regarding cty09kp?
    ksportsupport: what is the issue
jcrwzr: well i can only lower the strut shaft with the lowering mount so far
jcrwzr: or else the strut shaft will touch the cv boot
jcrwzr: i was wondering if you make a shorter strut shaft
ksportsupport: did you try adjusting the spring perch down as well
jcrwzr: yes, but then shock travel is minimized
jcrwzr: i'd prefer to lower the front of the car with the lowering mount
ksportsupport: what size tires do yu have
    jcrwzr: 16x7 with 205/40/16
ksportsupport: that tire is .5" smaller than oem size, maybe thats why it has a gap
ksportsupport: we dont have any shorter shocks
    jcrwzr: dang
ksportsupport: and possibly becasue the spring rate is so high
ksportsupport: it compresses less than it would normally
jcrwzr: in reality if you did have a shorter shock, that would solve my problem
ksportsupport: yeah, it would, but we dont for that app
jcrwzr: hmm, what about other parts from another model like corolla ae92
jcrwzr: can that fit on my 2001 corolla
    ksportsupport: same length shock body
    jcrwzr: really!
ksportsupport: mounts are different, but shock is same length
jcrwzr: mounts? you mean where it attches to the axle and the top?
    ksportsupport: yes
jcrwzr: i was just curious because TRD made coilover suspension similar to ksport (they discontinued the part) but that coilover setup was for the ae92. and my friend said it fits on the 2001 corolla
jcrwzr: so i was hoping the mounts would be the same for both chasis
    ksportsupport: not sure
ksportsupport: but im pretty sure they are not
jcrwzr: so you use the same shock between the ae92 and the 2001 corolla?
jcrwzr: but the mounts are differnet?
ksportsupport: if you had the 7kg front spring on it it would lower the car 47mm when you put in on the ground, with the spring you have it lowers 22mm. so if you change springs it would lower an additional 25mm, one inch
ksportsupport: i think they are diff, i dont have tech drawings here
jcrwzr: but how tall is the spring?
    ksportsupport: 180mm
ksportsupport: or possibly 205mm, i dont have that info here
jcrwzr: i don't understand how the difference in spring height affects the overall height of the car
ksportsupport: it doesnt, only spring rate does
jcrwzr: but i started rubbing with 7kg and 9kg
jcrwzr: oh well, i'll just have to go with a larger tire
    jcrwzr: and higher sidewall
jcrwzr: oh wait, what are the differences between cty09 gt and cty09 rr?
ksportsupport: GT is iverted design, RR is valved for race
jcrwzr: but the height of the shock is the same
    ksportsupport: yes
    jcrwzr: dang
jcrwzr: higher side wall for me it is!
    jcrwzr: thanks for your help!

no you wont.. actually you would stay the same height. what I meant to say was to just go with a shorter spring and not touch the perches. Spring rates are measured in kg/mm or lbs/inch. Your car sees about 450-550lbs each corner, if you were using standard spring rates the spring would compress 1.5-2inch per corner on the ground when you set it up with zero preload (just holding the spring in place) in the air. Because you upgraded to about double what standard spring rates was, each spring compresses only about half of that when the car is on the ground. If you go with a shorter spring (about 1 inch shorter than what you have now) and not touch the perches that would compensate for the additional height you get from the upgraded spring rates without affecting shock travel.

Just go with a shorter spring length and raise the upper perch. That way you wouldn't lose shock travel.

yeah then i have a whole hands width of fender gap. i'm trying to eliminate fender gap by lowering the strut shaft through the lower mount. but you can only go so far because the cv boot is in the way. i lowered too low and my cv boot got all thrashed.

my only option left is to go with a higher sidewall tire, and to jsut lower the car with either 2 options

go with a lower spring rate, and then the weight of the car presses down on the spring,

or just lower the car with the perches and adjust the strut shaft as far low as possible without messing up the cv boots.

Let me know how you get it done so that when I get a set, I can lower my car without destroying my cv boots. hehe

Swift makes a 10cm spring but for short springs the rates only go up to about 10kg/mm. You might have to resort to lowering your spring perches. The shock strokes are pretty long so lost of 0.5 -1inch of travel is not that bad. I have never bottomed out my suspension before and I don't think you will either especially with 15kg/mm springs.
