I'm on Cusco Zero2R for almost 2yrs with no such problems. And I upgraded to Swift 10/8k springs last summer so I guarentee my suspension is stiffer. Maybe you should try hubcentric rings, those would take some of the stress off the lugnuts and put it onto the center hub. Also you could upgrade to APR or Blox wheel studs, Honda studs has pretty much the same knurling.

BTW do you always make sure you torque down to 76-80lb/ft?

Which lugnuts to buy... because s#*t happened.

This happened last Sunday along 14S aroung 5:45am.

I was with some friends on our way home from a party in Palmdale when I heard some strange noise coming from my rear tire. I pulled over and checked it out. I saw this....

FREAKING 2 OF MY WHEEL STUDS WERE GONE!!!! I tried driving for a few feet but I could really hear some noise that I know couldn't be good. So I called up AAA and had my car towed.

So the guy from AAA came with a regular tow truck and "tried" to tow my car buy the guy said that my car is not covered because it was "modified" because it was lowered. In my mind I said, "WHAT THE F*CK?!"

I asked him if he knew anybody with a flatbed and he gave me a number of this towing company. They got there and was able to tow my car (chipping some paint off my lip first! :( :(
    [IMG]

I got home and rested and tried working on my ride. I was taking off my wheel when one of the two lugnuts felt also snapped! So that makes 3/4 wheel studs broken!!!

I checked out Pepboys, Kragen, Autozone, and Just tires and everybody were out of stock of 12mm x 1.5 wheel studs!! Grrr.... Kragen had 2 so I bought them and pre-paid 2 more which I hope to get later. I bought the wheel studs of a Toyota Landcruiser so they'll be "extended" when placed in my car.

What pissed me off more is that 4 of my Volk Racing lugnuts are gone!!! Grr.... So, which black, open-ended, and extened lugnuts to buy: http://vvti.net/forums/showthread.p...74&page=1&pp=25

I'm really thankful that there is a God. It could have been 100x worse if my wheels got completely broken off.

Can't you just buy 2 more Volks nuts? Evasive Motorsports might be able to get them for you. If not, then I suggest getting these new Muteki SR48's. I've got a set on preorder and then should be coming in a few weeks. They're also available in chrome titanium which looks like a shiny multicolored bronze coating. This is the same company that makes the Kics Project R40 NEO Chrono lug nuts color(also a subdivision of Wheel Mate).

49.00 plus tax and shipping came out to about 62 bucks.

btw, I think maybe the suspension is so stiff that too much stress was exerted on the lug spindles and eventually weakened them until they snapped. It's a good thing you got Landcruiser spindles. They should be rated heavier since they belong on a heavier SUV.

wow, you're really lucky man! As you said, it could be 100x worse!
I think you better go check the other 3 wheels too, just in case.

If I see any Tom's New Actions on the side of the road and a corolla burning up ahead. I'll know it was you. haha JK. You should replace all your wheels studs with Landcruiser ones. That should be enough to handle all the shock.

I'm not sure who's suspension is stiffer but I'm still skeptical about my suspension causing his.

I don't have a torque wrench but I'm sure that I didn't over tighten it or bolted up loose.

I'm pretty familiar with cusco and swift and overall stiffness is really similar. but i think the cusco will absorb the shock shock better than your TRDs. Spring rate is stiffer on his swifts. so I would say overall everday drive, they would or should feel about the same.

You can get hub centric rings on ebay for less than 10 bucks shipped. I have a set and I have no more vibrations.

Ohh.. Now I know what does. All the while I had the wrong idea of them. So what side do I need to get? And doesn't Autozone, Kragen, etc. have them?

I believe TRD spring rates are 8/6kg (or was it 8/5?) I forgot but it could be found online easily with some searching. As for rings you need to find out the center bore diameter for you Tom's new action rims by either measuring it or looking it up somewhere. But pretty much all corollas 88+ have a 54.1mm (54.06 to be exact) diameter hub. I ordered my hubrings from america tires co. when I had rotas but I dont use them on my rays (since rays has different center bore diameter vs. rotas).

Also think about investing on a torque wrench.. even a Harbor Freight $20 torque wench is pretty accurate. 76lbs/ft is actually much less than most people might think. You could easily tighten the lugnuts much more beyond the 76lbs/ft click. Also it is important to have equal pressure sandwiching the rim onto the brake rotor as uneven pressure could cause brake rotor warpage.

I'm almost 100% positive that the rim bore is 73.1 mm. And yes, 8th gens have a 54.1 mm inner bore. I already have the right size ebay auction for you right there. Just hit buy it now. Pep Boys sells a nice durable torque wrench up to past 100 ft/lbs of torque. I picked one up for 20 bucks several years ago, probably beginning of high school, and it's still working like a charm today. It's the best investment. Keep it in your car. It's helped me out before when I blew a couple tires.

you're not supposed to use a impact wrench to tighten lug nuts.

damn ... that hella sucks. Even if you don't have a air compressor to torque your lugnuts tight at 80 - 90 lbs, it doesn't matter because doing it manually is already tightening it over 80 - 90 lbs. based from self experience because my friend has a torque gun. After using the torque gun, i could still tighten the bolts manually with a wrench.

I concur. Impact wrenches are not good precision instruments nor do they have any forgiveness in error.
