    forced induction + compression rate

    Hi all,

I'm new to this site (Yes I searched first) (but not overly new to car modification) and am curious about what you all do with your compression level with forced induction?

is the common thing to change the pistons for a set of wiesco ones with the 8.8:1 comp. ratio or do you leave stock pistons in, and only go for a low 'boost' level?

reason I ask - is in Australia it's very hard to get parts for 1zzfe (performance or stock {unless from toyota}) and I'm considering a turbo setup for my 2003 corolla, and well I'd like to get it right first time around.

Cheers for any and all answers.

    Ben / ParaDoX667

Vortex is running 12psi on stock compression..I only known of one guy here with 8.8:1, and he hasn't installed a turbo yet. :)

If you want to go all out, go for a set of 8.8:1 pistons, forged rods, head studs, etc..if it's a manual tranny, an aftermarket clutch and aluminum flywheel will help a lot as well.

    Thanks for the quick answer.

That was pretty much what I was thinking - while Vortex is running 12 psi on stock internals - I don't think I'd be game for that.

    I'll be looking at:

forged pistons, forged rods, head studs, titanium valves / springs and a decent ecu as soon as I find a place to make me a good turbo manifold.

    Cheers again for the answer.

Contact Dr.Tweak about the turbo manifold..he might be able to ship one to you eventually, but s/h will probably be really high.

With pistons/rods/studs, my inexperienced opinion says you're probably good for 15psi and up..probably until your tranny and/or axles break.. :p

im running just under 10 psi right now on stock internals/compression (something like 10.5:1) I have a pulley issue that im trying to sort out but it will push me to about 12 psi after im done...

You're not worried that at stock internals 12 PSI might cause your engine to go buhbye?

Considering I'll be aiming for 10-12 psi initially (turbo rather than sc) I'd don't think I'll chance it.

*Mostly because parts are a pain in the arse to get to australia*

why not? hehe i've got over 40K miles combined (on two different cars) w/o any damage. :) it's all in the tuning my friend. :)

hehe i know how that goes... i got a buddy from Adelaide. :)

and no, i'm not worried one bit. as i stated earlier... 40K miles -- 0 damage.

the only way to fly 8.8 is to punch it out to 82mm to make up for the loss of compression...

I already have the big bore kit installed already with wesco pistions and crowler rods. It should be a 2.0L now.It just sucks I have an auto. I am pushing around 100 hp and 96 tq to the wheels right now. Thats with almost 9k in my engine and thats with my catback, trd muffler and injen sr. Right now I am running to lean to have fun with it right now.

sounds about right for 8.8:1 w/ 1.96l engine... the 82mm gives good compensation for the lack of compression. I did the math workup on this thing quite some time ago.
