    Turbo'ing for Dummies

    hey guys, i'm not much of a engine person so i don't really know much about tunning the inside of the car beside an intake. May i ask how would a guy like me DIY on turbo'ing his car?

    let me ask first - how much money do you have? i think DIY turbo jobs will only be as good as your money's worth.

    i'm assuming you want to turbo a corolla? which engine? what year?
    you can turbo your car like a dummy, but you'll blow your internals. best way to go turbo is to first rebuild the engine with strong internals so you don't blow your motor. that's probably 3000.

    just wondering , does the 4a and 7a share engine mounts w/ the 1zz? looks like it in my manual , but cant really tell.

    My opinion is dont bother trying to upgrade unless like jcrwzr said... if you have the money. I think it will be cheaper to just do an engine swap where the engine is already turbo'd but that again is if your car can fit that engine. Even that will cost you. My recommendation .. if your friend has a corolla.. is dont bother.. if he wants something faster, just buy a V6 car or V8. The Toyota Blade which is rumored to be coming out in the US seems to be pretty fast. Its like a camry but cooler looking.

    The 00-02 corollas had vvti incorporated. 00-02 had 125 hp while the 98-99 non-vvti had 122 hp. Its a negligible difference. The 8th generations weigh an average of 2500 lbs. It will differ depending on auto or manual transmissions and with power sunroof options.

    doesnt a model of the 1zz have vvti?

    as for the turboing for dummies , go to corolla-racing ,and look up topic :"Found Bolt On Turbo Kits For 1.6 4AFE!!!!" (type exactly or cut and paste) read the whole thread , for good info.

    whats the power numbers on the 1zz w/ vvti? and how much does the rolla weigh that it originally came in?

    now yes , later no. your motor is not built for turbo , it has high compression , somewhere around 11:7:1 . for reliable turbo youll need around 8:1. so in order to make your car reliable turbo , internal motor work will have to be done. 1 . being the crank , they are relatively weak in 4afe , 5afe , and 7afe. so a forged crank and new rod bearings are needed to handle the extra force being excerted downward on the pistons. 2. the top end. you will need a set of dish pistons and a larger head gasket (thicker) to lower compresson. also , now that all this extra pressure is on your head under boos , you will need the added torque on the headbolts to keep the headgasket from being destroyed. this is where arp studs come in .

    so you see , all this just to make the car reliable , boosting around 8-9 psi. about $1000 worth of work and parts .

    now , the 4agze already has around 8:1 compression . forged crank , rods , and pistons from the factory , and also has ceramic coated pistons and rods to help better deal with the heat of a forced induction engine. all this and . . . . its factory supercharged . easily swappable to a turbo setup. cos5t of engine made for boost , with factory reliability $1000.

    so there you have it . i my self personally , would rather have the factory reliability of a motor that was already made for boosting , all the while getting 200,000 miles on it.


    and for the question above i posted about the 1zz swap . no , the mounts arent the same , but the mounting points are the same. looks doable if i had all the body side of the motor mounts.

    It depends on which year and what car.

    00-02 corolla 125hp
    03-07 corolla 130hp

    FF matrix 130hp
    4WD matrix 123hp

    00+ Celica GT 140hp

    MR-S 138hp

    The engines in those cars are all the same. It really depends on intake, exhaust, and tuning.
    And I don't know about the weight.

    i was just wandering about the wieght compared to my 7th gen , ar3e they heavier / lighter.

    dont u think turboing would be chepaer?? my 93 prizm has a good engine right now, 90K miles, running strong, wanna turbo it instead of doing a swap, what do you guys think
