Illegal street racing cars crushed

    That's sad. I know street racing is bad but crush your car without paying you a penny is just too much. They should at least give them back the black book value. :(
    What is next? Having a *illegal party at your house and they can burn your house down??

    What has world come to, in my opinion this is short sighted and a waste, even if they auctioned the cars off there would be profit at least, this way they are destroying someones' hard work, removing parts from the market thus providing greater demand for them thus encouraging more theft. What do you think?

    i think its a good idea well for the most part.. if i was the police department i would sell the cars at auction and get money for them thus getting more money to hire more police officers to deter street racing

    Well I think its a great idea except that no money is made only lost. If you don't race, then you have nothing to worry about. And if your car is flashy and ricy, one should think twice. So this cuts down on illegal street racing and rice.

    OK my 2cents.. well no.. 3 cents..

    After reading the article, I am kinda against it all. I mean the 2nd guy, it sounds like his car was crushed because he admitted to previous street racing. I think if you get caught in the act, getting your car taken away or stripped down is good but crushing it is i think pretty bad. We live in an environment where economy is pretty bad. If it were me, I would take a riced out car, strip it down, make it close to stock again and sell it. As far as the "illegal" parts, get rid of those or sell it to selected people who wont use it for street racing. I just hate to see good cars go to waste.

    I think that whoever gets caught racing should get their license revoked for 10 years or something. If you are in HS and you can afford $10K plus in modification, I"m sure it won't be hard to get another car and fix it up again. On the other hand, if you can't drive, you wont race. If the person really needs transportation, make it legal for them to ride only a moped. I think that would be worse off than crushing a car. If someone took my car away and told me my only form of personal transportation was a moped and I can't drive a normal car or any other vehicle, That would really upset me but at the same time, if that was the consequence, it would keep me from racing in the first place..

    Oh yeah, also a moped is good in gas economy, good for the environment. If anyone starts to say that a moped is more dangerous than a car, the counter argument can be "well if the guy wasnt caught racing in the first place, he would have been better off now and would be riding in a normal car".

    Scary news. Thats what makes me think twice before I attempt anything. So far all my stuff is coming from random people here and ebay, and I hope none of it is hot LOL. This is also why I've put the body kit at the bottom of my list. Practical tuning os all I'm sticking with right now. Will see how the cops in the hood react to that, and then go for the exterior. Theres a bunch of guys here in Indiana at the Chicago(IL) and Indiana border that have tricked out cars which include red blue and green neons, CF hoods, full body and lowering kits and rice can muffler mods. Mostly civics and cavaliers and of course, a whoooooole bunch of donks lol... So far, cops ain't doin nothin here, so I'm hopin to stay safe...lol

    I think basically that this is very harsh and pointless... take drunk driving as a comparison, a drunk diver is also a danger on the road not to mention that he/she is incapable of making right decisions, and best they get is car taken away and licence suspended, this should be sufficient penalty for street racers, destroying their cars is pointless and brings nothing, selling car like that on an auction would bring in more money, stripping it down and selling to legit repair shops also is an option, look at those cars, I bet that rims and sound system are worth over 5K i a car like that and why destroy it... reminds me of those stupid movements like destroying certain music because "it is bad for you" effect was that they would burn thousands of vinyl records or tapes, here the problem still persists, you want to end illegal street racing? open more race tracks, use money from selling the confiscated cars to aid in development of those, same like with drugs you gotta invest in some place where kids can go to to keep them off the streets in this case keep the off the streets in their cars...

    A lot of authority(cops, officials, politicians) are corrupt. They don't give 2 shits about the public. They only care about themselves. "Serve and protect"? More like "Annoy and abuse". The 2 biggest examples are right in the White House. Bush and Cheney. All the building contracts in Iraq... I wonder to whom its all contracted with?

    But even if enough money was raised to build a free race track, it would be siphoned off to supplement the paychecks of people who don't need it. Or it will be spent on pork barrel spending and other bullshit like that. And assuming they would like to build one, where could they build one without someone raising a stink about noise pollution and degradation of the property value? There's just too much politics involved. Authorities just want the quick way out of a problem: crush cars and hire more officers and officials to catch and enforce the stupid law which they came up with. It's no longer a democracy. It's bullshit.

    The stupidity is that the state wants to fund police officers instead of opening well designed, interesting, and FREE race tracks close to areas where street racing is popular.

    Take, for example, the officer I got behind tonight, hoping I could speed up a little bit (maybe 40 in 30?), and instead, I backed way off because the guy was weaving all over the place, and even had the nerve to yell at some guy who got in the wrong lane (a turn only lane) for trying to get out of it... a$$hole cops don't solve anything.

    Responsible public policy would provide alternative outlets, rather than funding for jail time, tickets, and headaches.

    I partially agree. Now that I have heard both sides, I know it is cruel to completely crush a car just because someone didn't know they were sold hot parts. However I do agree with crushing illegal street racer's cars. Even if you did sell the car and/or the parts of the car, they would end up on another street racer's car. Even if they are crushed though, you can still sell them for scrap metal. hehe

    i have a hard time "not knowing" you were sold stolen parts. get to know the person from whom you are buying...be a careful buyer...do research on the individual...and pay attention to stolen car reports. sure, it can still happen, but you're less likely to get stuck in that situation if you are careful.

    now what they dont tell you in the media is the fact that some cops will pull you over if it looks like you have modified you car and they can legally pull you over just for that. When they find some Illegal parts (which can even be catless exhaust or HID lights, or something simple) some cops will take your car away from you and send it to the impound where it could get crushed. I know a guy who had his bmw taken away from him for modifying his car to the extent where it wouldnt pass smog. Instead of getting a fix it ticket, he had his taken away. After going to court, he got his car back but he has a friend who was pulled over the same way and his car (audi TT) was crushed for having "illegal" parts. He doesnt race on the streets but likes to auto cross and yet I guess the judge felt the car was unsafe. Then there is another story where some guy had a early1970 corvette in mint condition and highly modified parts and was street racing and he was caught but his car was never crushed.

    My whole point here is even though there may be a law, some do not uphold the law the same way that others do. The guy I know felt that his friend had a very unfair trial compared to other people the guy knew.

    The law is good to a point. Sure it serves its purpose but it doesn't satisfy everyone. But in this case, I'm all for it.

    No. California is a great state, its just the damn politics and bullshit bureaucracy that ruins it for the rest of us.
    It really doesn't make any sense. If they can crush cars for modifications then they would have to round up tens of thousands of cars in California alone. What qualifies as modified? Wheels and tires? Ground effects? Anything that crosses their minds? Its unconstitutional. Sure, illegal racing should have serious punishments and those caught street racing should have their cars crushed by all means, but having cars crushed just for modifications is bullshit. Many people have modifications and still conform to legal standards. I'm sure that would cause outright outrage with the people. Can they really enforce this law across all of California? And how come I haven't heard of this coming to pass before? I didn't vote for it. How can it become law without consent from the people?

    I hope this undergoes some scrutiny from others. Seizing property without compensation sounds like something a communist nation would do.
