    Overclock: X86 Pentium M 725 Dothan processor

Is anyone familiar doing this? I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 with the 1.6 GHz Intel Pentium M 730 (Sonoma), 533MHz FSB and PCIe x16 chipset. I'm planning to swap it out with the 725@400 FSB and use the "pin" mod to overclock it from 1.6 to 2.13 GHz. Problem is I'm not too confident working with laptops. Can anyone run it through with me? Or better yet help me set it up?

biggest problem with overclocking a laptop is the fact that its hard to keep it cool. your processor you are working with still had a 90nm core and still was consider to get hotter than normal processors. now if you overclock that, you will get really hot which can cause a short on the mobo or video card. in my case, i shorted out the whole laptop. took it to bestbuy a week later and even they were still able to smell the burnt metals. haha. So my recommendation will be to not even attempt overclocking on a laptop with an intel processor that is at 90nm. 65nm is still ok. i've seen it done with success. Even if you overclock it to 2.13ghz, your ram wont be fast enough either to keep up so you wont see a huge change in performance but you will see your battery go dead in about 40min.

thats just a thermal compound. I can't logically see it working well. oh well. do you have just a heat sink or an actual fan on your processor? anyway dude, good luck with the mod.

I found a tutorial on how to swap and overclock a 725 processor in my laptop. If you use Arctic Silver 5, the temperatures will stay down. The stock peak temp of my laptop is 45 C and the overclocked version is only 47 C, so I'll be ok.

since I work for ASUS as an engineer i gotta tell you that overclocking a laptop is not really recomended since the equipment is made to have certain heat distribution / dissapation capability with factory setting, crancking it up higher will throw that off, best case scenerio is that the cpu fan will work on 100% all the time and worst is that it will reach temperatures where BIOS will shutdown the laptop so it won't overheat, and you really have no way of improving the cooling in a laptop cause there are no other radiators avilable, unles you do some really ghetto mod with radiator a different radiator sticking out of the laptop

Well... I gave up on the idea. I'm just saving up for a new desktop. Getting myself an Apple. I really don't like the new Vista.

Apple can also run Windows. Not Vista at the moment, but XP at the very least. That way you can have both OS's on the Mac. This is why I've switching.

intel macs can run xp, vista and even linux with the program Parallels only. not with what apple provides. Vista Runs a bit choppy when multi tasking with only 512MB ram (but for some reason better than regular PC with 512 ram). 1GB is ok but 2GB is highly recommend... you know microsoft....

I am Linux for life.... lol. Unbutu Rocks.. i'm a ex-Redhat user who gave up after terrible experiences with wireless networking with my laptop. Unbutu is better.. but then again, the last redhat i used was 4 years ago..

haha Windows runs better on Macs than it does on the PCs it was designed for. How ironic. LOL
It always reminds me of those new Mac commercials with "Hi, I'm a Mac." "And I'm a PC." LOL
    *goes to watch more commercials*

next time you have a Mac opinion, make yourself aware of what's currently available before voicing said opinion. <img src="http://vvti.net/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif" border="0" alt="" title="Wink" />

you can also dual boot into Linux without issues. Ubuntu will run reliably on any Mac, as it will readily recognize all hardware, INCLUDING the older Apple wireless cards (good luck getting other distros to do that). Parallels is nothing more than an emulator, not a full OS switcher like Boot Camp. that said, Boot Camp is an absolute turd.

I can totally understand that Macs and PCs could be religious issues for people, so I apologize if I said anything that wasn't good.

ok...my comment had to do with anything, not just Macs. i'm sick of seeing people make retarded and uneducated comments just because they haven't taken 5 seconds to look it up on the internet.

Linux distros are still full of security holes just like Windows...

now the real question is, why would anyone WANT to run Vista? we can't run it at work because it won't work with any of our medical software, and people would turn off the security features because they're so bloody annoying.

i agree, macs are expensive...so build your own: http://www.osx86project.org/

    To add to that:
You need a graphics card good enough to run Vista. Even if you buy a computer with Vista already, you get a whole crapload of pre-installed programs and software that you don't need. It's really frickin annoying. Before you even use the computer, you need to reformat it to make it actually usable.

    1. Most current video cards are good enough. The only reason Microsoft recommended a better video card is to run AERO which with an intel chip, is not a problem even with onboard vidcards. AMD had a problem in the beginning making sure the video card they put in their systems will support AERO fully since the processor technically doesn't recognize AERO well.

    2. Crap-load of installed programs.. That would depend on who you really talk to. I rarely use Mac's pre-installed programs too. I like Apeture/Lightroom/Photoshop vs iphoto. Dreamweaver vs iweb, vlc player vs quicktime, final cut pro vs imovie, i never used idvd. Always use Microsoft Office. I do use itunes though.. hehehe.

In the end, windows is still a windows machine but personally I think they microsoft is heading towards the right direction. Right now vista OS is in its first stage like when OS 10.1 was (which sucked in my opinion) But if the R&D people dont screw up and the Marketing people are smart enough at microsoft, i'm sure they will come back soon. in the mean time.. I am estimating in the next 5 years, Apple will gain 15-17% of the Personal computing market share.
