Which year WRX/STI to buy?

    Which year WRX/STI to buy?

    I've decided on the WRX for a while now and I'm looking at the different years. The 04-05 catches my eye but I want to see what other people think. Let me know. The price differences between STI and plain WRX are pretty big so I figure that since I'm going to upgrade anyways to probably stick to just the WRX.

    06 wrx or sti cuz 04-05 wrx are 2.0 turbo but 06 wrx 2.5 turbo...my friend has an 06 wrx tr and he swapped out the 06 tail lights with 05's looks damn nice....

    now he has the white reverse light and a wrx wing brake light painted black..so it looks even better now

    i wouldn't buy a used STi...ever. i'd be hard pressed to buy a used WRX, as well. both are going to be beat to hell.

    sad thing is, i speak from experience on this one. my RS (1999 2.5 RS) was beat to shit before i got it, and the maintenance sucked. it's been off the road for months since i've had to fix so much crap on it.

    Why not get an 02-03 WRX (should be less than $12k) and swap in the EJ20? Good motor and a proven performer. I love EVO's, but this option would save you thousands. If you really wanted to spend $30k, you could have this thing ready to spank ANYTHING on the strip or road course.

    Wrong. The US-spec STi's have the EJ25. The JDM ones have EJ20.

    I prefer the 2.0 liter. It retains some gas mileage while still having power when you need it. I think I'm going with the 04-05. The look of the older and the newer ones don't look as good. With the addition of morette lights, it looks really nice. Slightly like the front of the R34.

    if you prefer the 2.0 then i suggest the mitsu evo 8 or 9..2.0 liter with bigger turbo then wrx....

    I agree. And plus the WRX is well known for its ultimate S202 model STI. I'd like to modify it to replicate that.

    I like the 04-05 more. its not too agressive and not too weak looking. the 06+ I think looks like crap stock but when I looked at Cusco's GT car with a wide body kit, I thought it was the sexiest car so far. SO if you go with the newest model, must get the wide body kit and lower your car or else it wont look all that great. (in my opinion)

    when you go buy a used impreza, be very careful. most out there havent been maintained too well. When I was searching for my car, I went through about 10 impreza's only to find out all 10 sucked. then i came across my current car which was an automatic and i find out that the previous owner was a lady in her mid 40's and before that was a old grandma who was driving the car and before that, it was some young kid who drove it but i guess gave up on the car real quick so it was in really good condition when i bought it.

    I had been but the WRX still wins me over. There are more parts available for the WRX.

    btw how do you guys like the different styles of the 02-03(bug eye), 04-05(peanut), or 06+(eagle nose/nostrils)? They can all be interchanged and converted from one to another so I can potentially buy any year and convert it. It would just cost a bit more to convert it.

    i am not a fan of the pignose...i think the peanut eye looks FAR better than the current model.




    i think a GC coupe looks the best, though. :D

    When you mean bad condition you mean maintenance-wise? What year Impreza do you have Drunksaru? GC? I know that the Imprezas after that were reliable enough to be rated in the top ten most reliable cars for the consumer reports. So I'm not too worried. I just wouldn't buy a WRX with heavy modifications.

    Looks like I'm getting auto. The 4eat tranmission in the auto uses a different VTD (Variable Torque Distribution) AWD system. This AWD system adjusts power to wheels depending on driving conditions, making it more technically advanced than the AWD system used in manual-equipped vehicles. The normal driving split is 45% to the front wheels and 55% to the rear wheels. After a high stall T/C and Cobb Stage II, VF30 turbo upgrade, and uppipe, it'll be all set.

    The STi is tuned to understeer. When they put both of them on a closed circuit course, the STi understeered like mad. You can tune it to be neutral again but its only a minor annoyance. I just love the boxer engine in it. The 4G63 is a great motor power-wise but it has a lot of problems in the long run. My friend's 4G63 in his Mitsu Eclipse GSX had all sorts of problems. He finally sold it for good. So I don't have such a great impression. I'm definitely going Subaru.

    ive been pondering the same thing sti or evo , ive read that , the sti responds well to mods wher as the evo does not . i definitly would say the peanut eye , less miles too , im sure .

    OK, one of my good friends is a mechanic, and he's worked on several 4G63's. Here's the short version of why they have so many problems:
    People put pressure plates on them that are TOO stiff. This causes the infamous crank walk. People just upgrade something minor, then slap a stage 5 clutch and insanely stiff pressure plate on it. This stresses the crank too much, and the pressure plate pushes the crank in (crank walk). So, if you just be careful and do your homework on the clutch/pressure plate combo, you should be OK.

    Jesus Christ. I shit my pants. 415 brake hp... damn, and neutral handling to boot. I won't be able to afford the STI more less the 2007 model. I'm going to have to go with the 2002 bug eye model. Still pretty good. The S202 was designed off that platform.
