    1zz is vvti and 2zz is vvtL-i.
you can add the trd s/c to the 1zz and it will roughly have the same power as the 2zz.
you can turbo the 2zz and power can go up to around 200 or some people add camcon to the 2zz to get more power out of it

And they have different bore and stroke size. 1ZZ and 2ZZ are two very different engine.

1ZZ = 79mm while a 2ZZ = 82mm, although they are both 1.8L because of their stroke. Some 2ZZ people put 1ZZ crankshafts with custom pistons and rods in their engine to get it to 1.94L.

    1ZZ & 2ZZ question

what is the difference between the two? do they not have the same displacement? if they do then there can only be so many different possible ways to achive the same horsepower correct?

both are 1.8, 1zzfe is rated at 125hp and 2zz is at 164hp SAE corrected dynos and the 2zz has vvtl-i.....different designs..

So if they have different bore sizes would they not be different displacement(since your displacement is bore X stroke, correct)? So if you changed one of the distances(bore or stroke) that should alter the displacement, either higher or lower. I guess unless the 1zz has a long stroke smaller bore and the 2zz has a shorter stroke bigger bore?

And what is vvtl-i? I know what vvt-i is and kinda how it works.

They are very different engines: oil passages, heads (narrow-angle cams in 1zz, wide-angle in 2zz), variable lift in 2zz (that's what the L in VVTL-i is for), bolt locations in the block, head gasket, valvetrain, etc.

You're right 2zz's stroke is shorter than 1zz's
And I believe that's why ppl in celica forum call 1zz *torquey engine compare to 2zz.
