I have a 2001 Corolla. In the fall I started noticing a problem with the car hesitating at stop signs when idling and after I gave it gas, it was fine. That only happened a couple times a month. After driving it for another 6 months, the problem is happening a lot more frequently. I'm also having a problem at higher rpms with the vvt-i not kicking in. It will just hesitate anytime after 4000rpm. If I don't step on it as much the problem isn't as bad, but is still there. I've already tried the easy fix... new spark plugs, cleaning the intake filter, new pcv valve, fuel injector cleaner and the car runs smoother however I'm still having the same problems. The car has 73,000 miles and I always change the oil every 3000 miles. I've always run midgrade gas. What options should I look into next? I don't want to start replacing a bunch of stuff that doesn't need to be fixed.

I believe the VVT-i is always-on. It doesn't "kick in" like Honda's VTEC.

only VVTL-i has that kick like vtec.

Try to clean the MAF sensor.
What "midgrade gas" do you use? Don't use anything more than the manual recommended otherwise you're just wasting your money and make the car worse. Use 87 is fine.

Check your hoses and lines. One of them could be collapsed.

sheck your timing . also fuel pressure regulator , there the most common overlooked cause of engine surdging , if not the fpr then get some injectors.

I agree it could be the injectors. What kind of gas have you been using? Arco and other brands of gas, like offbrands are notorious for clogging injectors and sludging up valves. You can clean them out fairly easily. Try cleaning out your throttle body components as well.
