because it's a Matrix in Pontiac sheetmetal.
just like the Prizm is a Toyota.

now for the why's of it - GM and Toyota had a partnership...it started back when Toyota wanted ot get more of their vehicles in the US. they struck a deal with GM to rebadge them and get them into the states...and they sold like hotcakes. Toyota also sold a Cavalier in Asia that, aside from a few cosmetic differences, is exactly the same as a domestic Cavalier. they rebadged it, changed a few safety features, and made the interior slightly nicer.

it's called global marketing...and in the case of Toyota, it worked. it helped bring a ridiculous amount of attention to the brand, and assisted them in becoming a hugely popular company.

why? GM motors are strong, generally speaking...it's everything else on the cars that tends to break. dashboards crack, waterpumps die easily, interior plastics warp, electric locks and windows die quickly, etc. the motors, however, tend to stick around.

here's an interesting little factoid for you - according to Car and Driver, in a comparison of 5 different trucks, the Silverado ranked FIRST...with the Tundra listed as third (behind the Titan).

Yeah but for the long run for reliability, quality of parts, and resell value I bet you the Titan and Tundra win out.

I read in motor trend a long time ago that Toyota only sold 19 rebadged cavaliers in Japan and 9 of them were to a rental agency who wanted to appeal to the American business man.

19 in one year I mean, not the whole time they were for sale in Japan.
