Mitsu Lancer Evo vs. Mazdaspeed 3

I've been looking for a companion for my rolla since I want another car with more handling and power capability. I'm sort of split between the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution or the Mazdaspeed 3. Both post similar numbers but have different capabilities. Pricing for each one is also an issue. The Evo is around 30k while the Mazda is around 22k. Tell me what you think.

AWD, I can boost it more to match the MR hp output.

I think I'm gonna need to detune it some then to make it more daily driveable. At 30 mph, my corolla can outaccelerate it. sad...

I have another option. The Subaru Impreza WRX STI. I've been looking at that a lot too.

its considered to be slower than an evo. has bad understeer at high speeds, but doesnt break as easily as evo, subaru's look cooler, and its fun to drive.

STi is good, my friend has one and it's amazing! But the interior is too plastic for me. Never see Evo before since we don't have any in Canada.

It's cheaper yes, but I was looking at the consumer reports to check for quality as well and the STI prevails over the MR. The ordinary WRX even made it to one of the top most reliable sports cars in it's class. Subaru does usually have higher marks than Mitsu. So I'm happy with my decision. I won't be driving it to it's most potential on the street anyways. :) I'll only be doing that on the weekends.

i test drove the mazdaspeed 3 today. i was in palmdale visiting a friend and last time i went there, i got to drive a chrysler crossfire on the open road real fast and so I went to see if i could drive a mazda there. I actually wanted to test drive the miata but the salesman insisted on the mazdaspeed 3.

well i have to admit the car was very fast. There were crazy amounts of torque, enough to peel your face if it was a convertible. Anyway, the car is still only FWD and with so much power and torque, the damn car understeered like crazy. It was scary. I can corner on a 90degree corner with a corolla at about 50mph with some help from the ebrake but with this car, when I tried to do the same, i would either A) understeer and not turn or B) use the ebrake and then spin because the gas pedal is so sensitive that just a slight push will bring massive power to the front wheels and make your car spin. Also the clutch felt weird and the gearbox felt cheap. On the other hand, the car does look great and the interior is very modern looking compared to older mazda's and like any American car, if you just like going straight, this car "bones out".

So now to kinda get back to the original topic of this post, I still think Evos are the better way to go but if the mazdaspeed 3 became AWD and had something similar to the Evo's active center diff, I think mazda may have a pretty awesome car.

EVO!!!!!!!!! with out a doubt. I am dreaming of the day i will have my own evo. The STI is nice, but especially if u are buying a "weekend" car, u must get the evo. Especially the new evo 10.

Nice! Now I definitely know I'm making the right choice. You just can't deny the power of a turbo boxer engine. :D

how can u put the mazdaspeed 3 and sti in one breath? lol completely 2 different cars, but i think the MPS 3 is a great daily driver, and comin from a rolls, the torque makes u feel as if youve just sat in a AMG car lol
Has more than enough power for a daily car, has room, practical. STI youre talkin bout nuthin but shellin $$$ for maintenenace, insurance. I mean great car but in the end comes to hat u want and can afford
also IMO MPS 3 will own the WRX in looks anyday

Well, I don't buy cars on looks alone. Subarus are very reliable so I don't know why you would spend a lot of money on maintenance. It's just like a Toyota. The WRX will own the MPS 3 in the rain and in any other harsh weather conditions. I'm also buying a WRX for safety. I'll finally be able to take my car to Lake Tahoe without worries of getting stuck in the snow! :D And it has power. The MPS 3 has nothing on it except for maybe better gas mileage.

BTW, Edmunds is bs sometimes. They tested both cars according to price. They failed to mention that the Mazdaspeed 3 is limited and top of the line for for that model. They compared that to the base WRX. If they had compared the MPS 3 to the more expensive WRX STi, which one do you think would be blown away? Has Mazda ever been in any professional rally races lately? :D
