I got my check engine light on. It read.
troublecode OBDII (alpha) P code
trouble shooting PO420.
Does anyone know what that is? autozone said I have 2 of the same codes poppin up. How many o2 sensors are on the 02 prizm. I think the engine should be the same as the 98-00 corolla.
so the dude said it's either the o2 sensor(s) or the catylic converter. I have 125,000 miles.

My fiancee's 2002 prizm has been giving her the same codes lately. Replaced the O2 sensor wires and cleaned the sensors and it went away.

had a 2001 corolla, changed the O2 sensor and it was fixed.

after you changed the o2 sensors did you get better horsepower or gas mileage?

horsepower no. gas mileage... well maybe. too hard to tell

There are 2. One before the catalytic converter and one after it.

How much are they and where can I get them? I see autozone has them. Do those suck? And I asked the dealership and they said like 500 for both sensors. Do you recommend I do it myself? And can anyone help me with "lube express" thread under car care and maintainance?

Check www.froogle.com for prices on them. Wouldn't be hard to do it yourself, just use a socket wrench, extension, and an o2 sensor socket.

a little off subject but i had to replace my dad's o2 sensor so went to kragens and got the bosch for $130. time of installation: 15 min. figuring out where the o2 sensor was in the dark while being sick.. that took about 30 min. hehe

I would test the o2 sensors first before replacing them.

It's on the exhaust manifold (before the cat).

where is the front sensor? do i have to jack the car up and go under or go in the hood? i looked for it but couldn't find it. is it in front of the engine or behind?

Did you clear your of the codes first and then the codes came up again? 2nd sensor meaning on the exhaust? you should be able to jack up your car and reach it from the bottom. I've never heard of going under carpet. as far as I know you cant clean with wd40. just replace it.

oh my code is cleared for now I jus have a lil feeling the check engine light might pop up again. If one of my cyliders weren't working, would it come up on the code? would the check engine light come on? i just have a feeling that my engine is weak or something. maybe it can be the catylic converter? idk. the car does feel better with the new sensor and i think the gas mileage got better.

drive the car a couple hundred miles. right now that error code is still probably in the buffer memory. it needs to cycle out. if the car is good after that, you wont see the check engine light. if you dont see a performance in the car, you may need a tune up. or it could just be that its getting old.

btw I just found my corolla service manual, code P0420 - you know thats more of a cat system going faulty right? have you had your cat checked first?

nah but the piping under my car is all tweaked because i hit the tail pipe dead on reversing into a tall curb and it shifted the whole thing. I also hear rattling by where the hedder meets the cat or wtv by the first sensor. i was looking at the whole new cat system piping that i can jus bolt on from ebay. do you think i can find that at a junk yard?

aight I put in my new bosch o2 sensor for the front. i disconnected the battery for a lil and the check engine light is off. however autozone told me i had 2 of the same codes coming up. does that mean i should have replaced both of them? is the second sensor easier to replace? do you guys recommend that i get the cheaper sensor where i can splice the wires or get the one which connects directly. wouldn't i have to go under the carpet for that? also can i just clean the old sensor with like wd40 to get the corrosion stuff off and it would work fine?

well you are over 80k so you will have to do it yourself. hehe. check the junk yard and see if you can find a full exhaust set up. maybe just replace it all? btw, did you get error messages right after your accident or just recently?

yea my check engine light came back on. psh. i guess it didn't hurt to put the new sensor on though at 125,500 miles right? is the second sensor easier to change than the one before the cat? i guess i gotta get my car checked out or sumthin.

if you put your car on a lift, yeah its easy. hehehe. not not everyone has a lift. There are ODBII scanners that can also check further, not just telling you what the error code is but like for example, with the O2 sensor, it will tell you if the voltage is going through correctly or not and stuff. that would tell you exactly which one went bad. normally its the front that goes bad first like the one you replaced. i've never had to change the other one. anyway good luck

I had the same code and it was my cat. Both of the sensors were fine. Make sure you don't have any exhaust leaks. If your car has less than 80,000 miles on it take it to Toyota and tell them your cat is bad and theyll change it for free. Otherwise they'll charge $1000 if it's past 80,000 so you might as well do it yourself.
