    Non-VVTI Turbo??

Alright I have a 1998 Corolla and its non-VVTI, I was just wondering if it would still be good to turbo it or would I be better off getting a VVTI and adding a turbo to it??

It should be fine to turbo. One of the early 8th gen turbo Corolla's was a non-VVTi, and it runs great.

just my opinion but i think non vvti turbos seem to work better than ones with vvti.

ive seen a few turbos on a vvti engine in the past and sometimes it works great, sometimes you get more of a turbo lag. My friends who rally with corollas and celicas, they all prefer a non vvti engine. I am not fully familiar with turbos since i prefer NA but i think it also has to do a little with the ecu as well. anyway, the newer turbos i think are better. i've been reading some good reviews on it that was used with the 2zz.

On the side note, i hear mechanics are having even more trouble turbo charging engines with CVT now more than VVT. hehe.

So running it turbo with VVT-i would make it lag more. What if i wanted to go NA and bring the compression up would i be better off with the VVT-i ? Because im interested in racing in autocross and stuff of that nature.

VVTI does not cause turbo lag

I have a T3/T4 turbo on my car with a .63A/r housing. It's got a little boost lag (which won't be a problem in a few months) but it's boost response is pretty nice when laying back down on the pedal and when shifting.

Well, my car's an auto so I have no issues losing boost or RPMs between shifts. Do you have a wide band on your setup? What's the AFRs doing when you shift? It sounds like maybe it gets a tad rich between shifts and bogs for a second.

thats called bogging, is that a tuned turbo or just slapped on. I have the same bogging problem and im not turbo'd. it's common with the 1zz and 2zz engines especially with Cold air intakes

the two cars i drove had 1nzfe engines. not 1zz. and they had semi tuned turbos. i've never had the bogging problem wihtout turbo. and a turboed 2zz that a guy that i knowhas said he gets it very rarely. but all my other friends with non vvti engines have absolutely no problem. anyway with my past experience, i learned to like super chargers a bit more with vvti engines. but this was again also 3 years back.

    - Vamp how did you set up your car? what turbo did you use?

Bad tuning I guess. I run 10psi. I could run a few more if I wanted to, but it's not worth the risk since I'm working on building up the block right now.
