    Auto Painting

Has anyone here had their car painted at Macco? If so how did the paint job turn out and how much did it cost? I want to get a body kit for my corolla and then have the whole car and body kit painted some crazy ferarri RED or ORANGE or some kind.

Nice! I've read lots of bad things about maaco but I've also read some good things too. That cars paint looks real nice. I might have to run down to maaco and make an appointment :) Actually I need to buy a cool body kit first :)

I had my body kit painted there. They did a pretty good job. It cost me $800 to have them fix a few spots in the front and prime and paint all 4 pieces.

The paint should be less than $500. Generally the paint is good from these places (to an extent) but it's the prep work that is lacking. If you can sand and prep it yourself than you'll come out with a good job in the end.

    Good luck!

I've seen a cheap (~$700, IIRC) paint job..I was definitely not impressed. OEM Toyota paint is awesome -- but I think you're looking at a couple of thousand $$ for that..

Is Maaco good? Well by the commercials you see on TV they are.
Is McDonalds good? The commercials are really convincing.

These are all big chains that have paid corporate advertising that represents an image of quality and value and they put it all under one name. McDonalds, Taco Bell, Home Depot, Maaco. Yeah see if the "pros" at home depot can tell you where a fucken light bulb is without copping an attitude.

Some Taco Bells I avoid because the food sucks, and I go to the one I know has decent workers that make decent fast food.

So it's unfair to ask if "Maaco" or "Meineke" is good, you really have to find WHICH "Maaco" out of the 5 in your area does good work.

We must de-program ourselves of corporate advertising campaigns.
    :p sorry for the rant...

Just make sure where ever you go you can get some references, see some completed work and get to know the people a little bit.

Thanks for the 411. I might just say the heck with it and take on painting my car myself :) I have a Devilbiss HPLV spray gun, Hose Conditioner and 30gal compressor with regulators and the works. I wanted to get into auto painting but never got around to it :) Maybe now is the time. Hell and if I mess up big woop I'll just take it over to Maaco and have them make it right hehe :) Just kidding but seriously the only thing preventing me from painting right now is a clean spray booth. I wonder if you can rent them anywhere for a reasonable ammount to paint cars in.

    Yeah dude, Practice first!

You can make yourself a booth out of polyethelene sheeting "Visqueen" or "Polysheet", the stuff you use for vapor barrier in construction. Make the frame out of PVC pipe, make a tent kind of like those ones you had when you were a kid but big enough to park a car in and then some. :)

Have the bottom sides vented and then a vent in the top center. Use those air cleaner filters, they're like 89 cents for a 24" x 24" at home depot.

You need to make sure you have airflow coming from the top flowing down and out the bottom sides of the tent. You could build this in your garage. Make sure there is no dust in the air. Turn off the lights and look into the flashlight beam to see dust particles. Sweep and vaccume like crazy.

    Practice Practice Practice....
Read up on the internet, you'll find good DIY info if you look for it.
    Have fun!

if u spend a whole ton of money on ur car and end up getting a $500 Maaco paint job, u should go smack yourself...but if its just to revitalize the appearance of an old car, then i dont see why not. everytime i pass by maaco its usually old or damaged cars getting repainted, or ricers who cant fork out the money and get a half ass paint job. sorry if i sound relentless but it just pisses me off seeing could-be nice cars getting ruined by a cheap Maaco paint job

hmm, i've seen a maaco paint job, it was bad bad news, lots of overspray, orange peal, barely any gloss...maybe it's better at other shops, but i've only heard and read bad things
