On my way to work last Friday I could hear some "tak-tak-tak" sound from the engine bay.

I haven't check my oil since I got back from Manila so I thought that I ran out of oil. During my break during noon time I bought some oil and started the car. The sound was still there. I tried checking the belts, etc to see if there's anything that just got stuck but I don't see anything that's out of place.

Ey Jon, do you know any mechanic near your area? My car is still in my office, I'm scared to drive it back to my house.

I left it alone. It never hurt anyone. LOL It makes my motor sound like it's built. HAHAHAHA

My theory is that the valve guides has worn out or weakened. In the 1ZZFE's, the valve guides are laser etched instead of shrink to fit, so the exact shape of the valve is etched into the head. I'm guessing there are cushions around the etchings that have gone bad. It won't effect anything except for noise.

Well, what's wrong with it in the first place? If you need a new motor, I wouldn't go back to a 1ZZFE imo. I'd be looking at some 2ZZGE's or some other promising candidate.

They haven't opened the motor. They guy at Bill's said that it sounded like something banging in the head something ticking at bottom.

I've come to a decision to fix the car, then sell it.:(

It could be a bad wrist pin. Have him diagnose it thoroughly. Make sure it's not some unnecessary fix. If he needs to tear apart the motor, you don't have to sell it. You can upgrade the pistons, rings, rods, or sleeves while you're at it since it's open. Then, it wouldn't really be a loss. More like a double edged sword.

btw, you shouldn't trust one mechanic alone. Get the opinions of others. Actually, call Car Talk radio and ask them yourself. They will diagnose your car right over the phone. hehe Ask DrunkSaru about them.

All this happened after your wheels almost fell off? My friend with a maxima is experiencing something similar with banging and ticking and rumbling too but I think it might be the motor mounts although it sounds like the pistons are scraping and banging in the engine.

What is the official diagnosis? Did you throw a rod or bend your valves? So, if you're not getting a new motor then what is to become of the Corolla now and what car are you looking at next? I'm thinking whether or not to sell my car as well when I get my next car.

I'll try ko snap some pictures when I drop by the place. The mechanic said even the pistons are loose already.

Next car? I wanted an STi but I'm not feeling the new Subaru. I was also considering a XRS but I'm kind traumatized on buying a used one unless I knew the previous owner.

SO... I might switch over to the dark side and get a Si Sedan!:) We'll see.

No, I don't want to be faster than you... I want to be faster than most people. LOL I've always been more attached to the newer models with a great platform. I know that if I got a 01 or older, I would look for a turbo motor swap. If I get the 02+ then I would save money and time. hehe That's my logic.

But... you're right. I wouldn't be as cool as you. :D
